aibu to just pitch up during summer holidays?

Due to booking pretty much last minute the campsite we wanted only has 6 days and we fancy a longer break.

Do you think we could just find a second site and turn up on the off chance? or do you think it would be wiser to pre book?

We will be staying in snowdonia - we live in kent so probably looking at somewhere further south on way back. Is Pembrokeshire feasible?

As you've found, places get booked up during the summer. You could just turn up and keep your fingers crossed but that's going to be really frustrating if they are full and you have to try somewhere else.
I would prebook, but I like to have a plan of what we are doing (and have had dissapointed children a few times when places have been fully booked because I didn't phone up first).

Do you mean that you'd go to Smowdonia and then onto Pembrokeshire? That's a hell of a drive...Smile

TheoriginalLEM · 03/07/2017 20:13

yes i suppose it is but sort of on the way back :/

If it's somewhere you really like the look of, I'd book and I'm usually quite relaxed about things like that Smile$

Book!

You could talk to your 6 day campsite when you arrive and ask them to give you first refusal on any cancellations. Otherwise check some availabilites while you are there, PitchUp.com lets you search by availability, and then book. Popular places get booked up in the summer.

I have never been but the Snowdonia -Pembroke drive looks like a very slow windy route for a long way. I wonder what Smowdonia to Brecon is like?

TheoriginalLEM · 06/07/2017 22:34

Brecon would make more sense i think. We are going to play by ear as funds are limited we'll just see what happens

I'd book. I currently looking for a Welsh site for 2 weeks time. I only need 2 nights and they're all either full or min of 5 nights in the summer.

I've spent several hours per night and haven't found availability at any half decent site

We absolutely loved it here. Not actually sure if it's even close to where you want to be! Or if it's your style of camping. Or if it's available. So maybe a bit of a useless post.

End of July and August tend to be booked up to a year in advance. People are always surprised but I've no idea why it should be surprising.

Cookingongas · 20/07/2017 14:17

I do it all the time in south and west wales- it's never a problem. Did it last weekend and the weekend before. I will be leaving this afternoon noon to do it for the next four nights. But I like basic no electric, just a field and a toilet type places, which are usually more flexible

LovelyBath77 · 28/07/2017 11:49

we go to Dorset quite often and never book. Not sure about Wales though but think would be ok

Buttercupsandaisies · 28/07/2017 20:47

Seriously you need to book Wales - they're all 5 nights or isolated. We've been looking for weeks and all full
