I guess it's time to start planning our summer camping trip.
Where should we go?
Dd will be 3 and ds will be 1 and a bit. Too young to appreciate Sandyballs and the like.
I would like to go to Cornwall I think.
Anyone got some fabulous recommendations? We are me, dh, dd, ds and the dog.

giraffeski - Dorset is soooo much nearer than Cornwall, we went to Lyme Regis last year and it took us 5 hours, including stops.

We're off to Cornwall this year, am dreading the drive a bit tho'

also N Wales at Whit
Devon in with the Cornwall trip - away for 3 weeks - my mn habit is going to take a serious hammering [blusj]
probably somewhere in the Lakes at the end of the holidays

Mother Ivey's Bay campsite is very nice.
Fern and Phil have a caravan there.
It has it's own beautiful beach and amazing views.....

Last summer i still a lurker at mumsnet - i was trying to find other mums with feedback and tips on camping as i had never been before and was so wanting to start taking my children.

I found LOADS of great advice here and ideas too - and i never thanked you all

Anyway - we went here and it was wonderful . Just what we were looking for - quiet at night, beautiful views, clean and hot showers, non-smelly loos, big pitch surrounded by a private hedge (we were a no hook-up pitch), great wooden playground and huge ball field for children, ice-pack freezers, very very friendly and helpful staff, hourly bus to St Ives (80p return) - i could go on!

However the BEST thing was it was a 20 minutes (though up-hill on return) walk to Carbis Bay beach.

Highly recommend if you are after a friendly campsite without 'on-site entertainments'. I think they have a pool too this year.

As a single mum, i was a little tentative about camping, but we ALL had a ball and some wonderful memories. The children want to go back this year.

I'd like to take my boys to the surf/skate festival in Newquay, anyone know any good camp sites near there. Something nice and family-ish, so I don't get depressed watching all those young surfer types having too much fun whilst we have to go to bed early!!

squidette your fabulous holiday and the good time that you had really comes through on that post - it sounds a lovely place.

Big question.....were are you going this year then?

mamalocco · 16/03/2007 18:11

Isle of Wight - best place for families. Will be lucky enough to spend the whole summer down there and can't wait. So much for kids to do and never seems too busy even in the height of summer.

Look its an hour less than Cornwall

OofW is nice too- has been a mainstay for us, but skipping it this year (weren't sure we'd have the big car and didnt want to pay for ferry for Mum and Dad)- have got it now though

seven seats

AND a roof box!

The days of 5 people plus camping gear in a proton hatchback are over LOL!

We got the car on ebay and he threw in the roofbox for £20.

Lucycat · 16/03/2007 20:10

oh yes you definately need a roof box - we put all our squashy stuff up there, along with dh's fishing stuff - but that's a whole other story

You'd never lift the Indiana into a roof box though, it's gotta go in the boot - what sort of car do you have?

Lucycat · 16/03/2007 20:11

a car and a roof box for £20? good deal peachy!

PeachyClair · 16/03/2007 20:14

Oi.

No, but a seven seater, roof box , DVD and stuff for £1020

good enough for me

Lucycat · 16/03/2007 20:15

Wow

now that was a good deal!

We've just bought a new trailer off Ebay for camping. It's 6ft x 4ft x 5ft high! My plan is to keep it loaded with all the camping gear so we can sling a change of clothes in a bag, hook up and go. At the moment we have to get the gear out of all the places we're storing it, check it against the list then pack it.

We're going for a fortnight here in Cornwall. It's a very small site, but the toilets and wasing up area were spotless and the people who run the site are lovely. The first thing we were asked when we arrived was "cup of tea?" and she produced a tray of tea and cold drinks for the girls. There was loads of room in front of the tent for the girls to play and they made lots of friends. It was very much a family site and everyone was in bed by 10.30, which was fine for us.

My friends stayed at Polzeath the same time as we did on the site on the cliffside. They woke up one morning and saw dolphins playing in the surf .

Pixel · 21/03/2007 20:42

Surfermum, does it have windows? I think you'll find that's a caravan! .

Surfermum · 21/03/2007 20:52

PMSL! DH picked it up today. We could deffo put a mattress in it and sleep inside.

Bucketsofdynomite · 22/03/2007 17:40

We ended up replacing our Corsa last year because we couldn't fit our tent in the boot! Well ok, that's not the only reason, insurance, MOT and FIL writing off his car and needing a new one all played a part too but the tent sparked the whole idea.

After an extensive search for a campsite via tourist information etc I thought "Ah MN!!"

I found this thread on thursday evening and saw Squidette's recommendation for Little Trevarrack. I emailed them immediately for a brochure, it arrived this morning and 45 minutes later I'd booked a pitch for august. I looks lovely so I just wanted to say "thanks Squidette and thanks MN for coming up trumps again!"
