French campsites - Biarritz or further soith

We're looking for a campsite near Biarritz or further south, as we're getting the ferry to santander.

Looked at Le Vieux Port but decided against it on price, and also it sounds massive and maybe too hectic for us.

So, we're looking for a site with shady pitches, reasonable swimming facilities but not too busy. DC are 8 and 6 so would love a site where they can have a bit of freedom without us worrying about how far away they are.

We're looking at Le Col Vert which sounds nice.

Any other recommendations for (gulp) August?

Le Ruisseau near Bidart is lovely. Everywhere in August is busy on the coast though!

www.sandaya.fr/cv we stayed here last summer after getting the ferry to bilbao. Such a good campsite we've booked to go back again this year

Thanks callme that's one we're looking at. Might just book it today. Are there things to do locally?

I wouldn't say there was anything within walking distance but the town of Leon is about 10 minute drive and that was quite nice. The beach was about 15 minute drive away which was really nice with a couple of bars there. But to be honest the children loved the campsite so much we didn't tend to venture far. There is a really good cycle path which you can use to get into Leon too. There was a restaurant and 'beach bar' just outside the campsite which were both very nice too.

Do you think it's worth paying extra for the waterfront pitches? It looks like they face on to the lake, which sounds beautiful but wonder if it would be annoying at night if the water is at all flowing/lapping?

We had one on the waterfront pitches. Didn't hear the lake at all to be honest and I would definitely pay extra for them. The view is amazing and we've got a paddleboard we took with us so was easy to get out every day. There is a path that runs between the pitches and the lake so you have got a little space between the two and lots of trees around for shade. Take a hammock to tie on to the trees! Nice place to watch the lake with a glass of wine and a book :)
