Opinions wanted - was this ok?

We arrived at a site last Thursday and were told to pitch wherever we wanted in the large field, there were no set pitches.

There wasn't much space near the hedges around the edge of the field (which was roughly 300m long by 200m wide) so we decided to pitch in the middle. We were a group with 3 family sized tents and a small 2 man tent and we all pitched facing inwards with a gazebo in the middle of our setup.

We left the site by 10am on Friday morning and didn't get back until after dark. I was surprised to say the least to get back and find that someone had pitched with less than 3 feet between our guy ropes and theirs. Our tent is the green one in the picture, and our bedroom is the part showing (tunnel tent, obvious layout). There was ample space for them to have gone midway between the hedge campers and us.

It appeared to be a group of adults who were sharing a large tent. They were up until 12.30am talking which was ok, except that they were in their tent so were very close to the bedroom end of our tent. So we slept well after they went to bed until 6.40am when we were woken by very loud children and no attempts to quieten them. They were also in the tent behind us. They proceeded to play noisily, including hungry hippos at 7am - the rest of the site was still very quiet!

I spoke to the staff who patrolled the site at night on the first night as soon as we returned to the site but was told that there was nothing that they could do.

This happened on Saturday night, Sunday morning and evening and Monday morning. They left on Monday.

Am I being over protective of my space and safety (thinking fire risk) or was this too close to pitch up to complete strangers and an antisocial way to behave?

Am I alone in thinking that hungry hippos is not an appropriate game to take camping?!

That is very close given there was other space around - bizarre??

I think Hungry Hippos is fine though Grin (although obviously not at 6am!).

Looks too close to me! I had someone pitch their cooking tent about 1.5 metres from the side of my caravan at the weekend. I was grumpy about that but was leaving the next day so didnt say anything.

Not OK, but antisocial and downright odd!!

DH and I used to attract velcro campers in empty fields when camping in our youth... it used to amuse us but in my dotage being kept awake until 12:30 would make me positively murderous!!
