Campsites without fixed pitches - Lakes or Peaks?

I'm looking for a campsite without fixed pitches for a long weekend at the end of summer. It'll be a stopoff on the way up to Scotland from the SE, so something not too far from the M6 would be ideal. Any recommendations?

Why without fixed pitches?

I don't like having a little square to camp in. I prefer the more relaxed style like in the New Forest campsites, where you just find a bit of space you like and pitch up. I'm trying Abbott Park Farm, but was also looking for a recommendation a bit further south.
