I went to the Caravan and Motorhome Show at GMex today.....and found the idea of owning a caravan rather appealing.....

Please tell me how awful they are......and how my tent is fantastic....

I did get a free Camping Magazine though, that looks fab.

VW campervans are the way to go!!

Felt very smug camping on Mull with friends when they all piled into our campervan to escape their midge infested tents .

Is yours a splitty Quadrophenia?

Blandmum · 22/01/2007 07:33

and what 'camping' magazine???? I have only ever seen caravaning ones

Fillyjonk · 22/01/2007 07:42

vws ok cos they are cool

the issues i have with caravans are mainly design. they do look overly like puke.

but

i dunno, camping kind of forces you to par down and work out what you need to take and so on.

not to tin tents

oh and environment, bad, towing great things, bad bad bad. so ner.

Hey, mine's still canvas on the top - only tin on the bottom Takes 10 minutes to pitch. Can be pulled by a normal family sized car (ours is a Nissan Almera).

As I say, we're not light campers - we'd be towing a trailer anyway. May as well get to sleep in the trailer too

RubberDuck · 22/01/2007 08:05

AND it's still thousands of times better for the environment than going in an aeroplane...

quadrophenia · 22/01/2007 23:10

trixymalixy not a splitty they are very expennsive, there is a pic on my profile of mine though

trixymalixy · 23/01/2007 09:48

Oooh looks nice Quadrophenia!! Will have to show my DH, he's the real VW nut!

We have a splitty at the moment, but we bought it years ago and got a real bargain, were offered double what we paid for it a few weeks after we bought it.

We're having to sell it to fund having this baby though .

quadrophenia · 23/01/2007 17:37

oh no don't sell the splitty

do you go to any shows, Bug Jam? and does he post on Volkszone? I am a big vw fan, many of my friends who don't own them think I have a problem

trixymalixy · 23/01/2007 18:14

Yes, he posts as 1960bus. I'm getting my own back now that I have found MN as it used to really bug me how much time he spent on VW forums!!!

He has been to most of the shows, but generally the more northern ones as we are in Glasgow.

We have a Karmann Ghia as well and I would prefer him to sell that to the splitty, but it's up to him to choose.

quadrophenia · 23/01/2007 18:17

I post there also although not a huge amount, did to start off with and probably will so more in the summer months!
Am at karmann ghia I would love one, then i would love a splitty also, and a squareback but my budget just won't allow me! Haven't been to any northern shows although hoping to go to Deva Dubs and rods this year. Bug jam is great for me its only about 25 mins!!

trixymalixy · 23/01/2007 18:26

We plan this year to do up the splitty a bit with the aim being to take it to Vanfest to sell. Have promised him we can go to Vanfest as he has missed it the past 3 years in a row due to my exams and a friend's wedding.

We're both hoping we win the lottery inbetween so it doesn't have to be sold.

p.s. sorry Lucycat for the thread hijack!!

quadrophenia · 23/01/2007 18:33

Its lUcy's fault starting a thread about bleedin caravans

So what work are you going to do on it?is it cosmetic or mechanical? we have lots of probs with ours at the moment it has a huge oil leak, a battery that keeps draining and an idling problem, we're hoping to get them all sorted soon but we never dreamed owning a van would cost us sooo much money I will keep my fingers crossed that you win the lottery, I hate to think of people reluctantly selling their dubs.

Lucycat · 23/01/2007 18:38

aww shucks - I'm quite glad that the spotlight has moved away from my shameful confession

I'm back to my nylon holiday home now - all is well with the world.

We saw a gorgeous splitty though at the Caravan show! fab. Yours is a great colour quadrophenia!

Have you a photo of yours trixey?

trixymalixy · 23/01/2007 18:39

It has had various panels replaced over the past year or so, so is semi in primer at the moment, so needs a paint job in order to get the best price for it.

I think the chassis needs some welding as well. I'm afraid I don't pay much attention!!

I'm sure there are some mechanical issues as well, there always are!!Have got very used to sitting on the hard shoulder of motorways!!

quadrophenia · 23/01/2007 18:43

why my old friend the hard shoulder, we are well accquainted, the AA are a godsend except they can never fix by the side of the road

Lucy am so glad you have seen the light, stick to the canvas until you are old and in more need of comfort and toilet fascilities Glad you like the colour its a bit like marmite either you love it or hate it!

trixymalixy · 23/01/2007 19:20

Have been trying to find a photo of our splitty, but in the meantime, here's the ghia

ghia

quadrophenia · 23/01/2007 19:32

hehe thats so bizarre being linked from here to there!! It is absolutely stunning, I am totally in awe, I can see why you don't want to sell!
