Weirdest thing you've ever seen on a campsite.

We were camping this weekend, Saturday was a lovely sunny day but, as forecast, the evening was damp and the rain fell heavily overnight. During the night, around 3.30am, I heard the car engine of nearby campers starting up. At that time of the night I was a little irritated but, as the rain sluiced down, I thought perhaps they were having tent trouble and suppressed my irritation (though I couldn't quite imagine why tent leaks should equal car engine starting up). In the morning, as I drank my tea and looked around, I noticed that the nearby campers had in fact started their engine at 3.30 in the morning in order to park their car in their tunnel tent. I had to double take, my eyes can be a bit dodgy first thing in the morning but it was true; the front of the tent was wide open and the front two thirds of the car were in the tent. This is without a doubt the weirdest thing I have seen on a campsite and I cannot imagine why they did it. What't the weirdest thing you've seen and can anyone come up with a logical explanation for the car in the tent?

Weirdest thing seen on campsite was definitely the barn-dancing team in blow-up Sumo costumes.

Family pitched next to us on a nice, quiet, family-friendly campsite had gone off somewhere, and did not return until the following day.

We could hear what sounded like a battery-operated radio alarm with the batteries running down. After a couple of teeth-grittingly annoying hours, when we realised that there was nobody around and the bloody radio was not going to time out, we went into their tent to turn it off ourselves.

It was not a radio alarm. It was a bloody enormous sound system: CD, radio, decks, amps (yes, plural), and several other things that I have no idea what they were. The whole thing was softly buzzing and beeping away. We switched it off. Ahh, blissful peace.

Who the hell brings all that sort of kit camping? And leaves it switched on while they're out, feedbacking and beeping and driving other campers nuts?!

Camping in France, we were chatting to a nice lady who was supervising her teenage son and his friends.

She said she was waiting as her son and girlfriend needed time alone - we could hear them shagging very loudly but we all just ignored it and carried on drinking tea. She wasn't mortified at all.

Last year we were at a very quiet site near Coverack and a huge family party were camping together on our field (somewhat spoiling the ambience, but hey ho).

One morning we were woken by yet another addition to their group, a tractor towing a trawler!! I am not talking a small fishing boat here, it was huge and painted bright orange, so orange that it actually gave the whole field a rosy glow.

That night and every night thereafter about 30 of them got plastered in the party ship. It was actually hilarious watching them trying to climb up and down the ladders whilst drunk.

Saw a little canary or some other little birdie in its cage outside a tent in Italy. Also just love the advanced camping some do out there....table cloths, fake flowers in vases on table, artificial lawns (I shit you not), massive awnings, outdoor tv under awning, satellite (obis), clocks on tent wall, up lighters. I get serious tent envy and always vow to up our game!

Op, is it possible their tent was leaking so they slept in the car? They drove it in the tent for privacy because in the morning they might have had an audience gawping in the windows.

Regarding the VW under a shelter, I am looking for something similar! Didn't realise it was 'odd' Shock. We have a converted people carrier and a pop up gazebo would be perfect for an overnight shelter. Although we have a drive away awning for longer stays it's a complete faff attaching it and detaching it every time we leave the site. With the unpredictable weather in this country we don't want to get wet just opening the car door and running round to the back of the car where the kitchen is! The problem is finding a gazebo with high enough eaves.

Crikey, I've just thought of something ELSE that might put us in the weird bracketGrin When we used to caravan our guinea pigs and rabbit came with us and lived in a cage in the awning. We had a special rabbit lead and used to take Flopsy for a daily walk around the site. Perhaps we used to get 'looks' Shock

We went to a site in the IOW for a couple of days after leaving another site and it was only about 4pm and every camper/cara van had their windows covered with sheets/curtains or tarp was a bit weird

Once in the 80s we were camping in Big Sur (south of San Francisco) and there was a group playing Streisand on a tape player and drinking champagne from flutes.

poocatcherchampion · 26/08/2015 05:06

Trying to make the car dark so they could sleep in it.

Don't thank me I am a genus. so would do that

We are camping on a windy campsite on top of a hill. There are only a few tents up this end of the field one of which is a small 2 man tent on top of an old land rover! No guy ropes. And a ladder to climb up.

DH has just been to loo and told me tent is now down.

No, kelpeed, we just flicked off all the power switches. They had EHU, and we hadn't heard a thing previously, nor for the rest of the week. Maybe they used earphones? Perfectly nice, normal camping neighbours all the time they were there, apart from that one evening of weirdness when they weren't there!

At a bike rally a couple of years ago, it was winter and freezing. I was going back to my tent and a few feet away a guy had obviously started to have a wee, and fallen asleep, standing up with everything hanging out. I had to get one of the lads to wake him up and send him on his way lol.
