Wild camping with a 6mo and a 3yo

Am I mad?

We have camped lots before kids but never with. We have a 2man and a 3man tent so figured one of us and the 3yo in the two man, on a double airbed, and the other one in the three man on a single with the 6mo in his travel cot in there.

What do I need to bring? Foodwise we were just thinking bbq stuff for the two evenings, scrambled eggs and bacon for breakfast, and noodles or sarnies for lunches?

I need help compiling a list of stuff we need to pack. Bricking it, but the site is only 10 miles from home incase the kids hate it so we could come home if needed.

Do you have a camping table? Windbreaks and all the basics?

I found that I needed extra buckets and also extra wipes with small children.

We have chairs and a stove and water bottles and torches. My folks have tonns if stuff so I can raid that for a table and windbreak. Its woodland,so the campsites are totally sheltered all around the campfire clearing (you get a campfire clearing to yourself and the next site is through the woods).

Definetly planning on taking lots of wipes (no showers or loos) and a bucket is a good idea!!

If you don't already, a portable Pottette (sp?) is great as an alternative to a bucket. Our 5 and 3 year still uses it.

Woolley hats in case it gets cold at night.

You'll be fine!

If you like it would definitely invest on a tent big enough to stand up in, and with a small amount of space to be in if it rains, for the future.

Have a plan for if it rains - the 3 y will not be happy for long in a small tent.

Take easily eatable snacks alongside your food, wellies for the 3 year old - easy to slip on and off at the tent door, saves getting trouser-ends wet in the morning dewey grass.

Yeah the plan is to buy a big family tent eventually (once I am back at work after mat leave) - we bought the tents before we had the babies so figured we would give them a go and see how the kids took to it before trading up.

Wellies, check!

Take butchers hooks to hang over the shower / bathroom door and then hang plastic bags from those - stuff gets on the floor with little ones - you don't have enough hands and there are never enough hooks and the floor gets all went and their dry clothes fall in it....

But, some people, for 2 nights, would manage with wipes and not bother with the showers Wink

Its wild camping. There are no loos or showers.

Ah, right, proper wild camping!

We do 'wild-camping-style' sites where you can camp in the woods, or wherever you like, and have a fire...but then somewhere over the horizon is a toilet - possibly compost - and some form of rudimentary shower!

I would maybe all sleep in the three man together, then you have the 2 man to use as play area/ eating area/ adult sitting once children asleep

rememberingnothing · 27/04/2015 22:02

Take a tarp. Make enough shelter that you can sit the kids under it rather than come in and out of the tents.

We had a small pop-up from decathlon that we used as a playpen for ours when they were babies. We still use it as a storage tent now.

All in one waterproofs for small kids and wellies.

ImNameyChangey · 28/04/2015 10:24

Ooh and a dustpan and brush! Crumbs and grass in the tent when you've got small children and it's awful!

FadedRed123 · 28/04/2015 10:32

Lots of good advice here but surely I cannot be the only person who thinks you're bonkers to even consider it GrinGrin

ThinkIveBeenHacked · 28/04/2015 12:15

Tarp and dustpan and brush - check!
