Mess tins - how to use and for what?

Hi

Sounds like a silly question, but how do you use a mess tin (over a fire, gas burner?), and what do you use it for?

We usually bring a saucepan, frying pan, a kettle and disposable BBQs. Just asking as I've seen some mess tins on offer - seems good if I can replace a few of the items I bring and save space!

I have used ours on the gas and fire. For things like tinned beans, but in my youth I also fried bacon etc in them. Very thin so easy to burn things in them.
More of a backpacking bit of kit or for two people than family, I think.

Thanks Blu! That's really helpful. All the websites I've seen rave about them, but didn't want to rush and replace our (family) gear if they aren't going to be practical for us.
