Camping site near(ish) to Newcastle upon tyne

My sister is looking for a camp site for her family in Aug.
She has 2 children 4 and 1 years and living in Newcastle she doesn't want to travel too far.
Can anyone recommend a site?

I can recommend several. How far does she want to travel and is she happy roughing it with no facilities (which would give you my fave campsite) or not?

We just spent the weekend at Hadrian's Wall campsite (about an hour from Newcastle, near Haltwhistle). It was great. Clean facilities, friendly staff, good views, lots of Wall sites to visit. No playground on site though.

We've also been to Boe Rigg in Bellingham (a bit further from Newcastle, but not much more than an hour). Which was also lovely. Great spot, on site cafe, clean facilities. Small playground.

Friends have visited Herding Hill Farm, which is a bit more glampy I think! but also good. It's very close to the first one I mentioned. Has a playground, some farm animals (including alpaca, I think).

Brockwell wood

Beautiful back to basics camp site 15-20 mins from Newcastle. You'd need to persuade her that that you'd never know it was in blaydon as it's not the nicest area. This is just outside it and you could be in the middle of nowhere. No facilities (dig a hole for a poo or bring a portable toilet) but huge spacious pitches.

Boe Rigg

I do live on the north side of Newcastle but it's only 45 mins not over an hour (in my experience). Lovely campsite, mix of ehu and wilder camping, gorgeous cafe with the most delicious ice cream I've ever tasted (including g and t flavour) and lovely clean facilities. A stream for kids to play in and cows. Real on the floor fires.

Springhill farm

On the coast near Seahouses. More organised campsite. Fire's in fire pits allowed. Good children's playground and in Seahouses 5 mins drive away there is a great fish and chip place attached to a small soft play that would be perfect for 4 and 1 year olds, and a great beach.

We have friends who have been to herding Hill mentioned by the previous poster and they tabbed about it. It's on my wish list although I have been spoilt with brockwell wood!

Has she been to Beadnell Bay?

Thank you all so much, I think she is happy to travel into Cumbria, Northumberland and the tip of North Yorkshire.
This is their first camping trip with children so I don't think she really wants to rough it too much.
She is worried about having things to do or places to go with the children in the evenings.

In light of your most recent post Springhill farm would be my top recommendation of the 3 I mentioned.

I looked at Springhill myself. The limit of 3 dogs put me off. Possibly lots of noise at night?

Go into a book shop and have a nosy at cool camping book they have lots of recommendations in it.
I live in Cumbria but away on my hols at the min but of the top of my head can recommend one at Keswick. Called castle rigg. Beautiful views over lakes and fells. Brilliant showers and shop and restaurant.
Will think of a few more and post tomorrow.
Oh just remembered Quiet side on ullswater. Fab views and facilities.

I've just come back from Keswick. We stayed at C&C one on lake as dcs have a boat. Love it there.
