Talk to me of tarps

I feel like I need a tarp, in my head it would solve many of my shade/cooking in rain problems.

In reality erecting them looks like some kind of witchcraft.

What exactly do toy do to make then stay up? Can you attach it to your tent? Where do you buy them from?

Surely someone on here knows of tarpaulin trickery? C'mon spill the secrets :)

I've got one. It makes me swear and sweat lady sweat out of my armpits whenever I put the fucker up, and it NEVER looks taut.
I have a love-hate relationship with it which is mostly love in my imagination of a lovely extension to my tent, and hate with the peg and fiddle and peg and guy and fiddle and take it down and try it this way and WOULD YOU HOLD THAT POLE UP STRAIGHT FOR GODS SAKE and peg and tighten and fuck it open a gin in a tin.

I identified problems with shade/showers/cookery whatnot and needing some kind of outdoor canopyness (I spend a lot of time thinking about our camping needs and what product will fulfil them) and was considering some kind of tarp-cum-awning jobby.

In the end I decided on a Coleman Instant Canopy. I love it. It's mega easy to pitch being one-piece concertina style and while the fabric isn't 100% waterproof, it keeps the worst off and has weathered some mighty storms.

It has zero classic camping aesthetic whimsy, but I don't care, all our gear is function over form.

Best thing ever. TOTALLY waterproof and can be put up in so many configurations.Keeps the sun off too. I couldnt live without it camping
