All booked up for our annual camping holiday but have split from my DH since booking.
It has just dawned on me that I cant put our massive canvas tent up on my own. I have never driven the car with the trailer either.
I'm going to have to cancel aren't i???
The DC are really too young to help pitch the tent.
Any suggestions on how I can still go?

Can you borrow/buy a cheap second hand roof box instead of the trailer if that is an issue?

TheHappyCamper · 06/07/2014 21:10

I was also going to suggest roofbox instead of trailer.

stargirl1701 · 06/07/2014 21:53

Yup. 93 is fine. Have fun, OP!

Dayshiftdoris · 06/07/2014 23:06

You can drive a small bus / mini van / pull a trailer then SmileSmileSmile1

Go! Go! Go!

Selks · 06/07/2014 23:12

Oh do go, OP, there will be a way around all of your dilemmas if you apply some creative thought. Do let us know how you go on. Go for it! Smile

Do you know another Mum (and kids) who might like to go camping with you with their own tent? Then you can help each other with tents, the children can play together and you can sup wine tea together!

Ok so a bit of an update.......
I have called the site and explained that I will now be camping on my own and they said they will help put up and take down my tent!
I have had a go with the trailer and I am not too good yet but think I will be so long as I don't have to reverse round a corner!
I may also be able to borrow a vw van/people carr thing so may not have to use the trailer.
Feeling much more positive about this now!!
Thank you for your very good advice and helpful words. :-)

Good luck - it all sounds great! Hope you all have a fantastic holiday.

Fantastic ! Camping people are usually really helpful ,just waiting to be asked to help .

I was on a camp site once when the husband drove off ( no return ) leaving his wife and 2 small kids stranded . We all rallied round and after a few days a couple even took her out to dinner while others babysat . Often wondered what happened after the holiday .

You are going to have a great time .

You are honestly my hero. Anyone who pulls out all the stops to find a way to take their 4dcs camping after a split deserves a medal. So pleased the campsite are helping you out, have a wonderful time - I hope your dcs see what a resourceful mum they have :)

TheWholeOfTheSpoon · 25/07/2014 18:31

That's awesome! I've taken my 4 camping alone for years as we get long holidays and DH has to work. The first few times (when the kids were smaller), I had a billion and one people offering to help my put up the tent, even though it is a really easy one for one person to put up!

Keep going with the trailer. I think, with younger kids in particular, it's always better to pack heavy for camping instead of light. Nothing worse than running out of dry stuff!

Enjoy your trip!

Really happy for you OP. Have a lovely holiday Smile

I have a small trailer but for taking stuff to the tip ...I can't reverse it!
Have been told bigger trailers are easier to handle than little ones...
But as long as you remember you have the trailer, don't go too fast, remember you are longer so need more time to get past eg parked cars and take corners wide you should be fine ...
I can't even reverse straight (doesn't help my car is high up and I can't actually see the trailer apart from in the side mirrors if it is sticking out the side...) - if I need to I unhitch and move it by hand...
And I see lots of people at the skips doing the same thing...
Enjoy your holiday!
