Help, please! Last-minute small campsite on Isle of Wight needed for late July/early Aug

We meant to research this trip, got caught up in Stuff and then shelved the idea of going at all. But I'm fed up of having a naice tent and never using it. First time pitching it (outside the garden, that is) in three summers was last month at a small festival. DS1 is lobbying hard to go camping and since I foolishly mentioned that the Isle of Wight is dinotastic, he has fixed on that as our destination. And it does look fab.

Thing is, I think most places will be booked solid by now. Sad I think we want 5-7 nights, first week in august for preference. Small site much preferred, not really interested in a site with lots of facilities beyond showers, loo and maybe a little shop. I like a little shop. Wink DS2 (3) is a mad little escapologist with ASD, so somewhere with enclosed perimeters would be good.

Do any of you lovely tenty people have any recommendations please, or places to avoid like the plague?

Have you looked on www.ukcampsite.co.uk ? Lots of sites listed on there with reviews. Should be able to find one to match criteria.

Yes, working my way through, but hoping to find one recommended for families/on here. Smile

We went to Heathfield farm, which is over the west side of the island. Very small but also very spacious, with a games field where the children congregated in the evening. No onsite shop apart from a few toys, postcards and ice cream but we did an online Sainsburys delivery and the wardens were happy for it to deliver to pitch. I have an ASD child too and whilst he is not so escapey I felt very happy that the site was well back from the road and it was easy to see him most of the time.

That sounds promising, Profpoop! I've already looked there and not sure if our bell tent will fit into the pitches they have left for our dates, but am fiddling with the dates to see if we get lucky. Glad to know it's off from the road.

We are trying Southland. Caravan club site but they take tents too.

Profpoopsnagle, I've been looking at Heathfield on google maps - did you find it quiet? It looks like it's on the edge of town.

We went to Southland last year for 2 weeks. It was fantastic, is quite modern with generous pitch sizes but wasn't ott or overcrowded.

I'd recommend Ninham near Shanklin. Lovely small, family run site with new shower blocks. Also has small outside pool

Have you looked on www.junkaholique.com/ ? there are a few recent posts about camping on the Isle of Wight on small sites.

Look at chine farm. Big pitches, cliff top, has ehu of you want it, stunning views, clean shower block. Win win. I'll be there from 10th aug for a fortnight!

profpoopsnagle · 01/07/2014 07:06

Meandmyspoon it was very quiet- no traffic noise at all but near enough for shops and fish and chips. However one night a big sea fog came in and the coastal fog horn blasted regularly for quite some time.

MeAndMySpoon · 06/07/2014 23:20

Sorry, revisiting this. Good to know it was quiet (apart from the fog horn!). Smile Have booked.

We stayed at Carpenters Farm, near Bembridge last year.

Its got large pitches and is fairly well spaced out. No shop but there's one in the village and family shower units so if your DC is an escapologist that could be helpful. What might not be helpful though is that it is wide open spaces but the permiters are clear as boundaries. There was an enclosed play area.

We don't have DC and went out of school season but it was a lovely site.
