Camping abroad ..... what do I need to know?

Still not got around to booking our August camping week as nothing is inspiring me this year - so after a little google I was thinking of maybe France/Belgium for a change. Mentioned it to DH and he wasn't keen as he doesn't really like driving abroad so we would need to be within an hour or so drive from the French ports.

Do we need any different equipment eg for using electric?
What about driving eg insurance etc? I seem to remember you have to carry a warning triangle and vaguely something about lights etc.

If we are going to have to splash too much cash it will be a no-go this year, I think.

I like the look of Bruges/Ghent area - and you can still get ferries at reasonable times/not too extortionate price for our dates - so if anyone can recommend any sites that would be great.

Thanks

Hi,

There aren't a massive amount of things you need to take with you but failure to take what's required may leave you with a fine from the local police. Have a look at this, should explain what you need when driving in france and won't cost you a lot.

Hope it helps

You will need an adaptor for the hookup as they don't use uk fittings. Yellow vests for the car. Have a look on uk campsite forum they have a section on going abroad

Check your insurance covers you for driving abroad, if not a small payment will give you cover. The same goes for breakdown cover.
If you're not planning to drive too much then it's probably not worth it but we have a toll tag that allows us through the tolls and bills us at the end of the month- a godsend on long journeys where either DH or I sleep while the other drives :o

I'm not sure if this is law or what not but certain places require a breathaliser

Thanks for the info and pointers - that's exactly what I need.

I've looked into the car insurance thing before. You're covered for third party in Europe. If you want to replicate your whole insurance, ie fully comp, you'll need to add it on as a separate cover.

Breakdown cover is worth it as the French motorways send their own person for which you have to pay a lot of money. See here If you have AA it includes a day's European cover, but you can upgrade to cover more.

We stayed here www.campingmemling.be/index.php?lang=en which is pretty much in the centre of Bruges. Perfect location though I'd only stay 2 or 3 nights as the facilities weren't great.
