New Forest? Or any other suggestions! And is a week too long?

Me and DH have christened this year "the year of camping" due to being a bit skint Blush We're not hugely experienced campers but we have just come back from a surprisingly successful three nights in Gower, South Wales. We have a few days in North Wales planned for August, and also festival tickets for August. That leaves a week in July which I need to get something booked in for. We are thinking down South (we're in the North) for the weather. I love Cornwall but not the drive with 1 and 4 year old (who gets travel sick).

I was thinking of the New Forest? Does anyone have any recommendations/ suggestions.

Also am I being ambitious thinking 5/6 nights? The most we have done is 3. The one year old was pretty hard work (although loved it) and we all got pretty grubby and ran out of clean clothes.

Thanks!

The New Forest has some lovely campsites, Roundhills for instance. There is also loads to do in the day, Peppa Pig World, Longdown Activity Farm, and the New Forest Wildlife Park. There are loads of great pubs with beer gardens (Drift Inn) and ponies around which little ones find a great novelty.

I have my eye on one called Red Shoot. Looks really nice with good facilities and has been recommended to us.

The other recommendation was Holmsley, also good for kids.

We are doing the same this year as total camping newbies.

Happy camping!

We camped at the new forest and had ponies ransacking the bin bags and snaffling all the leftovers! It was hilarious. Can't remember the name of the site, but the DCs lived it.

ForeskinHyena · 30/05/2014 21:46

Loved it.

Not a camper but I do live in the New Forest and can tell you that the Red Shoot has a very good reputation.

Camped at red shoot last May half term. Was lovely but the site was packed in very tightly. We usually camp in Cornwall where there is so much space so we might just be spoilt! Surrounding area beautifulSmile

I thought Holmsley was a bit meh to be honest. The toilet/shower block wasn't the cleanest, it's really disorganised and the facilities aren't great. We're trying Verwood this year, Red Shoot was more expensive.

Christchurch is lovely, as are the local beaches. Peppa Pig World is fab (we're going for the third time this year). There's a really nice country park near Bournemouth too, I can't remember the name but there was a Gruffulo trail that was good fun.

My family are in the new forest. Brokenhurst has a camp site near it and accessible by train if no car.

New Forest is great try:
Key Haven and Hurst castle
Beaulieu (village and park)
Lymington
Leap beach
Loads of nice pubs!
Pilley is nice for walks
Lots if pick your own farms
Wildlife park is ace too Grin

If you are looking for other ideas, what about studland, in Dorset? there are some nice campsites close to Corfe Castle.

I think you can camp at Sandy Balls. We stayed Ina log cabin last June and loved it.

mrsnewfie · 30/05/2014 22:29

That's good to know flipflop. Will give that one a miss!

MegBusset · 30/05/2014 22:36

You can indeed camp at Sandy Balls and the site has really good facilities, plus there's loads to do in the area :)

MegBusset · 30/05/2014 22:37

Moors Valley is the nearby country park, which is fab.

FlipFlopWaddle · 31/05/2014 08:47

That's it, moors valley. Thanks Meg Smile
