3 young DC - we go to the Lakes on Monday and it is wet. Weather report says it will be raining on/off all week. We are in the NW anyway and it is currently bucketing down and has been for days!! Can you please help with my list, what do I need?

  1. Have waterproof trousers/coat for the older two and splashsuit for over the toddlers coat/ski trousers. Wellies for them all (and snow boots, if it's just muddy and the wellies are soaked). So (hopefully) outdoors should be ok. Coats/Wellies for us. Couple of shorts/t shirts in case it is nice and crocs.

  2. Blankets for over the sleepingbags in case it is very cold - jammies, vests and socks and possibly dressing gowns for cosying up in the tent.

  3. Colouring in stuff/books, etc for when in tent.

  4. Wine.

What else should I take please? We normally do Europe, where it is usually summer and we don't need to consider wet weather gear! TIA Smile

Parasol for cooking underneath when raining (dangerous to cook inside tent)

wickedfairy · 24/05/2014 16:27

Thanks Brie! Forgot to say we have a tarp for cooking outside, but definitely worth mentioning just in case!

Wind break? Will help keep any wind away so you can have tent door open a bit,

spare towels - great for rain camping and you will find 1001 uses.

are you elevating the sleeping bags at all? if not then put another few blankets in for UNDER the bags.

Rug to work as carpet if you havent got one.

Slippers -great for keeping feet warm inside a tent I find.

Do you need to change you meal plan at all? salad might not cut it but warming chili would be great etc.

Big bin bags - I find loads of uses for them, from folding over with a towel on top for wet foot wear to putting under wet coats to catch the drips etc.

Hope you have fun - I love camping in the rain (funny strange person!)

Bin bags
Wellies
Board games
Extra tent pegs in case breezy
Night time wee bucket!
List of nearby indoor attractions
Washing line/pegs to put up under tarp to dry off and keep wet things out of tent
Hot water bottle
Hot chocolate!

Thanks all! We don't have a windbreak but do have tent carpet, washing line, etc. I hadn't thought of hanging things up under the tarp though, so thank you!

Keep 'em coming! SmileSmile

Couple of big brollies to use when going to the shower block etc.mat or old towel to step onto when putting wellies on or taking them off, to avoid getting the groundsheet wet

Watch crocs on wet grass. I slipped and fractured a vertebrae when I slipped when wearing crocs.

Old towels to put just inside the entrance to your tent, to keep the inside of the tent dry when you're going in and out.

Treat food. Can you light a fire? Popcorn under the tarp if you can. Marshmallows. I do crepes when the weather is pants. Sugar, nutella, jam etc. Soups, stews, damper bread (if fire allowed). Hot chocolate...basically everything you wouldn't let the kids eat too much of at home!!
dominoes, pick up sticks, games the whole family can play so you can sort of have a tournament/running competition thing going on!
We take soft tennis for when its smirry rain...
Cosy socks. Go to £1 shop and get as many pairs as poss.

Spent years camping on the west coast of Scotland...it was a shock for us (and the tent) the first time we hit France and it stayed sunny for three weeks!! No jeans...they take too long to dry!
