Eurocamp in Brittany may half term, great idea or a bit bonkers?.

There is availability on quite a few sites, and I'm really tempted. Has anyone been in may half term? Will it be half dead? Too cold to stay in a tent (we will take our own duvets) or even a mobile home?
I know the weather isn't guaranteed but we were thinking of going to Scotland but accommodation is £££ and it will be colder!
Any tips/recs for nice sites?
Probably southern Brittany
Many thanks!

I suspect it'll be a degree or two warmer than the UK south coast. Don't they say that you have to at least south Brittany to start seeing any difference from the UK?

We went to Carnac last year in mid-June and it was only just warm enough for the outdoor pools but plenty warm enough to camp. Apparently it was an usually cold summer though!

You're right about some places being dead -my in-laws live in Brittany and one thing they're discovered is that a lot of costal holiday places do shut up for the off peak months. You could avoid that by going somewhere like Carnac though. The Grand Metarie site was great, had a (coolish) indoor pool but is really shady - perhaps not great if the weather hasn't warmed up yet. Lots of shopping in Vannes Grin

We're just back from camping in Brittany, we stayed here, the holidays in France start today so we're were practically the only ones there! We had the pool to ourselves which was actually really nice. We visited a really pretty town nearly called Ploumanach on the pink granite coast, near Perros Guirrec, and there were people on the beach but it wasn't too busy, perfect really Smile. Weather wise it was still cool overnight and first thing, and fairly damp but nice during the late mornings and afternoons. The toilet and shower block wasn't heated which made showers a bit chilly and very quick so I would check that there's heating in the blocks or go with a mobile home. I would go for it! Grin

We went with Siblu to a site just south of Bordeaux a few years ago for Easter.

It was chilly in the mornings, but we had a static caravan with air conditioning which we used to warm the van up in the mornings.

If you're used to camping in the UK, I'd go for it!

We've been before and it's fine but french pools are usually chilly. Last year the sea was too cold to go in but previous years has been ok. A compromise might be Chateaux les eaux at Pair Sur Mer in Normandy. They have a massive indoor pool complex. Local beaches are good and fairly empty and there's a fab zoo nearby. We went for a few years. Mobile homes have heaters which you do need in the mornings and evening.o

we used to go may half term and the week after for quite a few years for our main hols. we liked it as it was much cheaper and places were nice and quiet - so no trouble parking right near the entrance to the really popular beaches and some we had more or less to ourselves.

it was cold in the mobile at night. but i remember sunbathing/having bbq's, spending time on the beach/swimming in the pools. restaurants were open, no traffic jams on the way to the resort. things at the site were open - may half term is one of their most popular times. maybe not quite the number of activities in the bar, eg no big bands.

south brittany is a little warmer than north. carnac area is lovely

thedevilinside · 29/04/2014 09:56

Of course, we went to northern France last year, the weather was awful, but the mobile home was heated did Paris, Disney etc. Brittany will be slightly warmer. We always do eurocamp in May, Italy this year, and save the summer for camping holidays in the UK when it's warmer

staverton · 30/04/2014 11:15

Thanks so much for your advice - we are going to do it. Looks like a lot of the pools are heated. We always go in the summer with our own tent, but will rent a mobile I think. Going to drive from Calais as cheaper and availability.
Now need to decide on site - La pointe st gilles in Benodet, La grande metairie in Carnac, L'atlantique in Beg meil or Le deux fontaine in Nevez. any views?

carnac is lovely area site is large and pitches a bit mixed - we went to the area about 4 times and weather is warmer than mid/north brittany. inside pool and lots of table tennis tables when we went

i also like les deux fontaines - i liked the fact you would walk to a nice beach across farmland. eurocamp pitches also good size and quiet.

atlantique not so keen on, but i think that was in part because the weather was so bad.

staverton · 30/04/2014 21:26

Thanks. Think I'm going to book la GM in carnac

We're going to La GM from 30th May, might see you there. I'm taking my kids out of school for the week as it's our only chance of a holiday this year. I'll have 4 of mine with me and my friend will have her 4 with her too so you will probably hear us before you see us.

APMom · 02/05/2014 22:35

Should've said we're going with Thompson Al Fresco, they were wayyy cheaper than all the others but we're going at the end of your mid-term.

Flappingandflying · 04/05/2014 16:40

L'atlantique has small pitches. You can wave at the person in the next mobile while washing up

Changebagsandgladrags · 08/05/2014 21:32

We went to Northern France about three years ago in May half term. We're not sun lovers. Anyway, we stayed in a tent just fine. Some days were rainy and chilly, some not. I don't remember waking up cold or anything.

So further south should be fine.
