Does anyone know anything about Hymers?

We're finally selling our beloved Mercedes 608 camper van, admitting that three kids need more than a hammock above the cab and a travel cot on the floor, and thinking about getting a proper motor home, but something old and with a bit of retro charm. Actually DH wants a shiny white one, but we can't stretch to that, or to a vw, so retro charm it is!
Anyone own or know about Hymers? I've seen a 1981 one on eBay for £5k, quite like the look of it, but don't know what I should be looking for re common problems, value, etc.

Is camping a bit slow in November?

Ah thanks, didn't think about parts. The one we're looking at is on a Mercedes body, but I know Fiat and other manufacturers do them. I was imagining that Hymer were responsible for the camper bit, and the actual mechanics/engine/insides were down to the vehicle manufacturer.

I think the campervan should sell without too much bother, so maybe we'll keep the funds in the bank until the perfect thing comes along.

We would wait, only the mot is due in April and is rather sell it with a few months remaining than have to put another one on it. Will think on it a bit more, maybe..
Seen some lovely Hymers, all over 30 years old, and under £5k. Don't want to be without a van come spring, but we just can't do another summer in Myrtle!
