New to camping. AIBU to want wifi?

Younger dcs desperate to do some weekend camping (bought a 2nd hand tent on impulse). Dh wont go, he hates the idea! I am happy to take them on my own as there are lots of places locally. AIBU to want wifi in my tent so I can browse and MN when dcs are asleep? I

Not sure if this goes against the ethos of camping or not but along with hot showers and clean toilets, wifi is on my wishlist.

Personally though I think you should be outside staring at the campfire with a glass of wine, not mning.

3G no good in rural areas. We live near the New Forest and its mostly impossible to get a phone signal.

I will definitely be sitting outside with a glass of wine! But I might still feel a bit lonely once dcs are asleep. I only sleep for 4 - 5 hours a night as opposed to their 10 hours! That's a lot of star-gazing and wine-drinking even for me!

Some places have free WiFi in eg the games room or something... Went to the Inside Park in Dorset last year, they had it there and it was useful to pick up the odd email, google the nearest supermarket etc. but it was quite a way from the tents, you couldn't do it in the evening when the kids are asleep. Maybe head torch, good book, more wine?

God no, couldn't leave dcs asleep in a tent while I MNed in the bar! I will have a book and torch but I might still feel lonely .

Also, thinking ahead to summer when I will be dragging my reluctant ds, 13, with us for a weeks touring in a motor home, I think he would really appreciate wifi too. He is older than dds and feeding baby goats, paddling in streams and early nights just isn't going to work for him.

Shows how reliant we have become .

Good time for you and older ds to stay up late together, instead of both on Internet? Sorry I don't mean that to sound how it probably does I just mean when you actually let go of the gadgets it's really worth it, especially when you're in the great outdoors

Some sites provide Wi-Fi for a small charge.

Not at all unreasonable I don't think. Plenty of sites out there with wifi. Most of the camping and caravan club sites have wifi and loads of private sites too.

Camping doesn't have to be minimal you know.

What about a mobile dongle for the network with the best coverage in your area? We had one for £2.50 a month for camping x

I always check 3G signal on Orange website before booking a campsite! I've camped near brockenhurst before and had a good signal. Enough to MN, etc.

I have thought very hard and yes I do want wifi. I prefer browsing to reading a book (terrible attention span these days).

Beanonoir, I know what you mean and yes to some lovely time giving ds my full attention. Though it looks like he wants to stay home anyway which leaves me with 2 younger dcs who will be asleep by 8pm at the latest. Could be a loooong evening.

Millimat, was dongle able to give a fast connection? I have used one before but it was £££ and slow.

Some sites do have wifi - I have been ringing around as younger dcs raring to go camping for the weekend. But it is variable. One suggested I walk 2 miles down road to the library .. not sure it will be open when I want it to be!

YANBU. I've never been at a site with wifi but can usually get signal on my mobile. My DS spent a fair bit of time watching programs on the ipad while we were away last weekend- felt 'wrong' but also so useful since I was with him alone, he's only almost-3 and I needed to keep him busy while I cooked! And it kept me busy while he slept.

We're going to this site in August. You can pay for wifi in their top camping field, so could mn if you wanted to.

no idea if it'd be too much of a trek from the New Forest.

South lytchett manor in Poole has wifi. If I remember rightly
Look on the camping and caravan website, seems to be quite a common thing now.
I've stayed at another site near the new forest which had 3G we watched X factor on the iPad. I'll have a think what it was called
