Just booked french holiday!

Finally booked it! Our first abroad camping trip with the kids. Can't get over how expensive a campsite can be in August! Booked Le Lac d'Orient near Troyes & a site in Fontainbleau (so we can nip to Paris on the train). The glitzy site is £220 for 6 nights!

Congratulations and bigbuts. We can't book ours until the end of April and I'm getting very twitchy.

We visited Troyes once years ago, the centre is really nice. Proper historic and the same shape as a champagne cork, apparently. The site looks fab but £220 does seem like a lot. Shopping is quite expensive in France at the moment too but you can save money if you take staples, such as pasta, cereal, rice etc with you, and just buy the delicious French foodstuffs there that you can't get at home.

I've been looking at Fontainebleu as a potential stopover en route to the south. Looks very pretty.

I was a bit shocked at price - think the glitzy big ones are similar prices in the area. The Fontainebleau camping Les Pres is the one we are staying in Font. It will be our first stay but friends highly recommend it. They are climbers and say has everything without the fuss! If my maths is correct think that one will only be £100 for 6 nights.

Overall will still be very cheap holiday

Fontainebleau is awesome. Am writing this from gite near Milly la Foret. Have stayed near here many times for the climbing which is fun for kids as well as adults. White marked kids bouldering circuits in various places - even our 3yr old has done some. We always camp at La musardiere near Milly when we camp here - quite basic campsite facilities (toilets, showers, washing up etc, no shop but visiting vans in summer), but good kids playground and nice swimming pools. Easy travel to Paris - buy mobilis zone 1-5 tickets to cover return trip and all paris metro/bus etc. actually less than cost of regular return ticket. Off into paris tomorrow for kids furst trip up tour eiffel.
