camping in france

please help!
am looking for a holiday next August pref in mobile home/cottage on a site.
would prefer it to be next to a lake, within walking distance to a small town.
would need sun so probably have to go quite south.
so had thought of dordogne, but they dont seem to be near towns really - unless anyone has some clues?!

alternatively maybe south coast (though dh not that fussy on sand!) but again walking distance to nice town - had though port grimaud ??

anyone any recommendations? kids are 5 and 7 so they want pools/slides!!

dinky we went here this summer. Bit big, but fantastic on site indoor and outdoor swimming pools, slides, wave machines, lazy river. There were also two lakes to go boating on, on site pony rides and nearby stables as well as two play parks, kids' clubs, tree top go-ape style adventures for all ages (very safe ones for younger children) Loads to do.

The town is more than a walk away - about 5 mins drive but with great restaurants, traditional street market and hypermarket.

The DC had the best time ever. They were so happy and never bored or complained. It is in Brittany, not South, but the weather was lovely. It could have been lairy because it's huge but it wasn't. We never return to the same place on holiday but might go back there because it was such fun.

We've been there! It's an amazing place, and we loved it but after one year of being pissed on in north France, we are very wary of that risk now.

Need that site a bit further south!!

Yes. Wouldn't that site shifted to the South of France be the best family campsite ever.

Le Vieux Port in Gascony is very near to a huge lake, walkable/direct access to beach and has great pools & slides. The sea gets VERY wavy - surfers paradise, but you can hire pedaloes on lake.

Mountains and Spanish border are very close too.

Parc des Alicourts (Loire) has an onsite lake and good pools, but miles from anywhere else so have to drive out (we stayed 2 nights on way south once).

Domaine des Naides has an olympic pool and you can walk to the beach and Port Grimnaud - or if you can scrifice pools and slides we stayed at Prairies de le mer this year which is on the beach and adjoins Port Grimaud. No lake!

The Languedoc is also hot - we have stayed there several times - love it (but no lake!)

Have you considered the CHarente Maritime - it is usually warm, beautiful countryside and drive-able in a day from Caen/Cherbourg. Siblu have some good sites there with great pools etc.

Not quite walking distance to the nearest big town but definitely walking to a boulangerie and bread/crossaints/take away/supermarket all on site. Great area for the beaches and weather (just south of La Rochelle). There are a lot of huge campsites in the area with a lot more facilities but we wanted something a bit quieter. It has a swimming pool and play ground.

There were also two ponds to go sailing on, on website horse drives and close by stables as well as two perform recreational areas, youngsters' groups, shrub top go-ape design journeys for all age groups (very secure ones for youthful children) Plenty to do.

I heard from a friend this summer that www.huttopia.com/ is great.
