Luckily tent and sleeping bags were in a box with a lid but some stuff was on top, cool bag, duvet, groundsheets. Mice have been nesting in there and left droppings everywhere and it all stinks of wee. How do I know it's not rats! Are their droppings much bigger? Im surprised mice wee stinks so much.

mice droppings are tiny . rats are fairly big . Mice ones look like pencil lead :(

Mice droppings = black rice
Rat droppings = liquorice pellets (smaller than jelly beans)

If droppings are left everywhere then it is probably mice. Rats are actually quite tidy and tend to have toilet areas.

Mind you, still needs some serious cleaning as both transmit all kind of diseases.
