Eurocamp at Bel - swim shorts rule?

FlightofFancy · 24/06/2012 22:26

Off next week to Bel in Vendee (with Eurocamp) and trying to explain to DH about French swim shorts rules. He's going off on one about it ("Fine, I just won't swim all week then") so does anyone know if they enforce rule there? Presume will def be strict at nearby Aquapark?
Also are rules enforced for toddlers?

Am also horrified to read that no suncream in the pool either so not quite sure WTF that is about and how to stop 2 yo burning if not allowed sunsuit or cream? Am not normally precious but both he and I burn very easily, so rule essentially means we won't be able to swim?!

We had a holiday in Europe for 3 weeks last year and only fell foul of the trunks rule at our last campsite. DH had long leg speedo's and was not allowed in Hmm He ended up in a pair of DS1's trunks (I still wish I had a picture). It's a hard one to call as it depends on the site I think. They were madly strict about it in that last place though. As for sun screen, you should really put it on 20-30 mins before going out anyway, in which case it will be all sunk in and no one will know. Works much better this way too.

This is generally the rule in "public" pools in France - so yep, one must embrace the budgie smuggler look. As Lost says = apply the suncream before going out - you should do that any way.

Portofino · 24/06/2012 22:34

Though I have seen the trunks thing enforced, but never the sun cream. Dh actually got told off by the life guard for getting sunburn.

Portofino · 24/06/2012 22:36

In fact I was so annoyed with Siblu's rules on inflatables, and dd got a snorkel and wasn't allowed to use that either, that we are going for a gite this year.

For sun lotion Buy Soltan once, it's guaranteed to last 6 hours even on beach and childrens sun suits are allowed in France. I've been to a few sites and whilst most have a no swim shorts sign I've not seen much evidence that it's enforced even the French ignored it.

Call eurocamp before you travel and ask about how strict the campsite is in enforcing the rule. We are just back from la garangeoire in the vendee and the trunks rule wasn't enforced at all on that site. Dh had been a bit stroppy beforehand so I called and eurocamp said they didn't enforce it on our site, even though it is law in France.

On the two days it was warm enough to use the pool we applied sunscreen in our mobile home before going to the pool area.

P20?

FlightofFancy · 25/06/2012 09:39

Thanks guys. I've calmed down a little bit - it's ridiculous really as I'm normally very much 'you go to the country you stick to its rules/culture' but just got in a tizzy about the whole sunscreen/sunsuit issue. Will pester Eurocamp and find out how strict the campsite is - have persuaded DH into Casino-Royale type speedos, but would never manage proper budgie smugglers, so will have to cross fingers and hope.

Thanks for reminder on P20 sunscreen as well - will go with that!

Never had a problem on any EuroCamp sites, as you say though the Aquapark is likely to be a different kettle of fish.

Ooh, we're off to Bel next week too Fancy! Can you let me know what you find out in the end?
You'll be able to spot us, we've got the standard MN camping gear - a bell tent & orange icey-tek Grin but no bunting or fairy lights just yet.
Fingers crossed for good weather

AllOverIt · 26/06/2012 21:39

We stayed at Bel last year. Good news... They don't care about what swim shorts you wear. It's such a lovely site, safe and family friendly. We're going again this year!

electricslide · 27/06/2012 16:47

Was just coming on to day don't worry! We're Bel regulars and you can wear whatever. DH brought speedos our first year; they were soon binned! Have fun, it's a great site :), we'll be there in August for our 6th trip.

AllOverIt · 27/06/2012 20:30

Ooo might see you there electric! We're there in Aug too! Smile

ThisisaSignofthetimes · 27/06/2012 20:33

Off to bel in a couple of weeks, no speedos and sun cream fine last year!

loubielou31 · 27/06/2012 20:42

Casino royale type short will be fine anywhere. I always thought the rule was there so that you would only wear your swimming clothes whilst swimming and were not the kind of shorts you would be happy to walk around in generally. Am I right?
But agree to phoning Eurocamp. They will speak to the reps at your site and then you'll know for sure.
Have you got your breathalysers in the car?
