Anyone got any gems to recommend? We're thinking Cornwall / Devon / Somerset, preferably not too big or caravanny, with not too many activities laid on, for very keen camping parents (us) and DSs aged 2 and 5. Thank you!

I can't recommend these sites because I haven't stayed in them yet but I have booked Northdown Farm and Cloud Farm after loads of online research. They bother have a very relaxed attitude which suits me and you can have camp fires which is a bit of excitement for the evening!

I stayed in Eweleaze Farm last year which is the sister company of Northdown Farm and it was fantastic but it's only open as a camp site for a month and the dates don't suit this year.

Thank you! Eweleaze does indeed sound amazing, and we know folks headed there this year, but sadly not us for the same reason as you. Will look at the others. We stuffed up so badly last year (Kelling Heath, Norfolk - great but just not us I guess) that I am under pressure to find something to take the taste away. Although have been to other sites since so it's dimming in our memories...

I live in this area and know a few..... I'll have to put them as direct links as I'm in a rush (and sorry if some are stored as ukcampsite review... it's just how i bookmarked them...) Most of these errr on the basic/farm type sites (as that's how we like it) and many allow fires...

You might be interested in my blog YellowFields Camping, it is on the Mumsnet bloggers network or just google it. I write indepth reviews, with loads of piccies, of campsites I have visited. I always go to campsites with campfires and the wilder side of camping! I live in Bath so should be relevant to you. Cloud Farm is a glorious place but the new owners have got a bit greedy and it can be packed, I've done a blog on some great alternatives in that area. My favourite campsite at the moment is Thistledown Farm, but in Gloucestershire so might be not quite the right area.

stayed at Old Cotmore Farm recently and loved it. Really friendly owners, beautiful area and not too many rules and regs. Things like free hot water and an equipment swop area (where you can leave unwanted fishing nets and camp chairs etc so others can take them for a donation to Macmillan) were great features.

littlesthobo · 22/06/2012 17:54

Bizarre - have just emailed Old Cotmore Farm before coming to MN! Thank you so much for so many amazing suggestions. We also love campfire type campsites, and Wowo is a firm favourite for this (although always weirdly tempted to leave a Daily Mail lying around to see if we are forcibly ejected...)
