vw camper van with a toddler, sleeping arrangements?

I tried bumping an older thread, but no-one answered, so thought I'd try my luck with my own thread.

We're going camping in July with our 4 yo and 20 month old. We are hiring a Camper van, so we can't try and see what fits, and am slightly panicking about how dd2 is going to sleep! Apparently a 100 x 80cm travel cot will fit but I'm not sure where in the van this will be.

Does anyone have a good solution? Dd2 is a wriggler, and Not To Be Trusted when it comes to falling from a height for example. We are hiring a VW T2 so was planning to put sensible DD1 in the pop top, but what to do with DD2? I have no real concept of how the pop top thing works or how big it is and likelihood of a child plummeting if they so wished. Help please oh wise camping types!

My brother used to sleep in the boot on an old cot mattress in ours ( with the dog for company). My sister sometimes used to wee onmy parents fom the bunks in the pop top, ah happy memories.

We rented a VW camper last year when my twins were 4. They both slept happiliy in the pop top. The beds were like hammocks and they had to be poked into them. Once they were in, there was no getting out. It is very cosy up there and i don't think that a child would plummet. if they did, it would be onto you on your bed below. Another option might be to sleep with your little one in the bed below (bit squashed, but who cares) or take a little tent and take it in turns to sleep outside. We had a complete ball in our 1971 camper - such a laugh. Did have one night in a motel when a storm came in though.

We had both dds (26 months and almost 4 at the time) in the pop-up of a hired van last year. You can slide the boards that make up the bed so that the gap is over the sofa bed below, there would not be more than a couple of feet to fall & the landing would be soft (or at least your head will break their fall Grin). It takes a couple of nights for them to get used to it & stop giggling & kicking each other, but they get there in the end.

Alternatively ask the hire place for an awning that attaches to the van - this is just like a tent, so you can put down air beds for them & zip them into the sleeping compartments!

Enjoy, we've had a great time in our vans, just wish we could afford to own one!

Thank you, this is reassuring! We have an awning as well, so could go with the standard travel cot in that. She may never go to sleep out there though, so hopefully the pop top will be OK! I guess we'll have to experiment when we pick up the van. If it is possible to endanger herself, DD2 will manage it!
