Camping in the Vendee in June for 1 week?

Hi, we are planning on going to the Vendee in the first week of June with a new caravan and three young children. I phoned the campsite today and was told that the outdoor pool and some of the toilet blocks won't be open, which got me thinking....does anyone know what the weathers like in June? We will be travelling on the eurotunnel so will have 7 hours drive (broken with an overnight stop each way) plus another 2 hours in the uk to get to the Tunnel, so quite a trek for just a week. Has anyone done it early in the season? Is it worth it? Thanks

It's much like England, but slightly warmer. If it's raining here, it probably will be there (in my experience). We went last year in August and it was pants. We went in 2008 in late June and it was lovely (as it was here too, no rain during Wimbledon!). We were going to go in the first week of June too (half term!), but decided to go to the Somme instead as it's a lot nearer so if weather is pants it won't be so devastating.

Thanks Merry - I'm a bit worried about such a long journey if the weather is pants (not that the kids will be worried either way!) but I guess you just can never predict it. Hope you have a lovely trip to the Somme.

We drove there from Scotland in the 2nd half of July last summer and it rained almost every day. We got two "beach" days out of a 7 day holiday. Still loved it as lots to see and do, but I really had been expecting a sunnier climate!

I feel very embarrassed to be put off the distance Iggi when you travelled all the way from Scotland! Good to hear there was still lots to do even when the weather was bad.

Is there lots to do in the rain? Guess it depends on age of kids too. We spent a fair amount of time in the house, or picking blackberries! But mine were 2,2 and 5. It's pretty huge so depends where you go in the vendee.

we've stayed in Normandy, way N of Vendee, in late May/early June & the weather was fabulous, though a little chilly at night

It is a long way S of even southern England after all

We went a few years ago for two weeks in August, camping at Jard sur mer. It peed it down most of the time though when it was nice it was lovely. We came home after ten days though because of the weather. IMHo it's a long way to go for a week, though we are from the North West so it was a trek down to Dover as well.

I love France- but never have luck with the weather :(

I'm betting on a fab Easter this year. I really wanted to risk Easter, but didn't have the guts!

MaryMotherOfCheeses · 22/02/2012 23:41

I'd be more concerned about parts of the campsite being closed. What else in the area is going to be closed?

yy weather at that time of year is pot luck, imho and very much like here. I was in Languedoc last year at that time and we had one day where it was 14 degrees.

Ponders · 22/02/2012 23:48

really, MaryM??? Blimey. We've had a couple of holidays in Roussillon in June, & it tended to be nearer 30 than 20

MaryMotherOfCheeses · 22/02/2012 23:52

I think we were unlucky, tbf, but it's made me very wary.

We were near Les Sables d'Olonne last Easter and the weather was absolutely gorgeous for the full ten days.

I'm a bit concerned about going this year in August - sounds like we'd better pack the wellies. Although it can't be any worse than our typical mixed up summer.

MerryMarigold · 23/02/2012 21:47

Last Easter was fab here too. We had the paddling pool out Grin and naked kids left, right and centre. It was sooooo hot. Then we had a rubbish August here, and a rubbish August in France. It's just really dependent on what year you get. 2003 was a fantastic August .

frenchfancy · 02/03/2012 15:27

June in the Vendee is generally very warm with no rain. It is August which can be slightly iffy.

We get much more sunshine than the Uk and weather is on average 5C warmer than the south of England.
