Can anyone suggest any nice campsites near York?

DS is a train enthusiast as was hoping to combine camping with train museum in York.

Also, what other places of interst are worth a visit in that area?

wouldnt be too sure on campsites How old are your children?
theres loads to do in the area. - theres flamingoland near Pickering - which is a theme park and zoo, Harewood house near Leeds- a house and gardens with a big playground and bird place; The Deep which is an aquarium in Hull, Monk Park Farm near thirsk which is a great farm with a big playground (we go there quite alot.. In York theres the Castle Musuem which is good but perhaps more for the older kids.
let me know how old your children are and I can give you some more places if you want..

Frizbe - where's the Viking village? I've never heard of that and it sounds just up our street!

northerner · 03/01/2006 21:44

I live in Harrogate, not too far from York. Have never heard of Viking village. But there is the viking centre in the city centre. It's excellent.
here

There is a fantastic water park just outside York and a great indoor play centre called creepy crawlies.

Nbg · 03/01/2006 21:48

The Viking Village is in a little village called Murton.

(I used to be on the leaflets for the place when I was younger, dressed up as a young viking girl My claim to fame!)

You can get to it by going out on the main road to Hull from York.
It's great fun. The local primary schools take the kids for days out there.

Having said that if you don't want to go there the Jorvik centre pretty good.
There is also the museum gardens. You'll have to check out what the lastest thing is there. It's always dinosaures when we go.

but not till summer, will it???

bettythebuilder · 03/01/2006 22:20

We were in York today. (not in a tent, I hasten to add). I haven't been for a while, but the railway museum is supposed to be fab, esp for enthusiasts. There are also quite a few steam railways around this area, Embsay Steam railway, the one running thro Goathland that I think was used in Harry Potter, and a little one in Leeds.
I'm a mine of vague information!

BadHair · 03/01/2006 22:31

The National Railway Museum really is fab, and I'm speaking as a (whisper it) steam enthusiast.

I have a friend who lives in Malton, near York, and when we went up there last summer she took us to see Flying Scotsman running through the local station on the York to Scarborough line. It might be worth checking to see if it's still doing that run, as I bet your ds would be impressed (we all were!). The Keighley and Worth Valley railway is great for a day out too.

Don't know about campsites though, sorry.

amylou · 04/01/2006 17:01

flamingo land would be good for the 4yr old as there are alot rides for little ones.. There is also sea lion shows, magic shows etc.. When we have been we have never got as far as the zoo bit but I heard its good.

GoodKingWestCountryLass · 04/01/2006 20:55

Thnaks everyone!!!!

No definitely not camping til summer you'll be glad to hear!

DS would wet his pants if he saw the Flying Scotsman and if he saw Mallard he would probably go up like a can of pop and not come down for a week
