MUMSNET Bank Holiday Camp - East Sussex

So......
The in laws have agreed that a camp out in the fields is fine for the August bank holiday weekend.
We are going to hire a couple of toilets, and Karl and Susie are going to make us some composting urinals.

The 'invite' is going out to CNA, CNT, Mumsnet Camping forum and a bunch of archaeologists from the British Museum, its not going to be open to the general public. There is plenty of room for each 'group' to have their own areas, as there are 2 fields of approx 8 acres each.

I will be knocking up a few communal fire pits, and people will be welcome to bring their own. We can provide a spade to remove turf if you want your own fire - top layer can be put back after the fire to avoid damage to the field/fields, as these fields are on our environmental stewardship land.

Camp will open 11 am Friday 26 August, and close 5pm Monday 29 August

Pre-orders for firewood, locally produced charcoal, farm reared sausages and burgers, and other local produce (MIL has offered to bake scones, this COULD be a good thing!!)

Price £35 for the weekend for the tent and up to 4 people
£10 per weekend per extra adult
£6 per weekend per extra child

Facebook page is here

will be adding some more bits and pieces to this over next few days, including prices for the 'glamping tents' If I can sell the 'Herring Gull (can sleep up to 4) and 'The Grebe' (the bell tent - could also probably sleep 4/5, though request for quiet at night as near a pheasant run with baby pheasants in) then the whole camp could move into woodland / wildflower meadow and could probably organise herb walk/foraging walks and other sorts of things. Could maybe do those anyway if there were any interest.

send me a message for more details/info

If we clear the 'parking area' I dont see why not. Will speak to my OH and see what he says. We could always pretend that you were in one of the field tents and used it for travelling only Smile

Nettle, saw your place included in the C&S newsletter e-mail - I got a little bit excited for you! Grin

funnypeculiar · 12/08/2011 23:22

Am folowing you on fb - don't think we can make your special weekend Grin but will try and come visit next year!

ShoutyBag · 12/08/2011 23:40

Is it just me, or does anyone else think this is very expensive for camping? No offence meant btw.

NettleTea · 12/08/2011 23:45

Oh, it is I agree. We are still only charging £35 for the camping for the weekend, all the rest is what the yurt people charge to hire the yurts. It was just another option as some people might fancy it.
I havent seen the newsletter - better get myself a copy!

£35 for a weekend is a bargain Grin

feetheart · 17/08/2011 20:59

Hello, can we come please?
Me, DH and 2 DC (8 and 5) with our own tent.

Pictures look wonderful, DC very excited already :)

feetheart · 17/08/2011 21:15

Trying to work out how to PM you but failing Hmm

NettleTea · 17/08/2011 21:24

I have sent you a message, and will be contacting everyone with details over the weekend.

NettleTea · 21/08/2011 21:31

OK, think I have messaged everyone. May be more than the 6-12 families I guessed at after all!!
Our archaeologist will be building a wood fired clay oven that weekend too, the guys staying up in the posh tents will be helping out, but sure a few more hands wouldnt go amiss if anyone fancies seeing how to have your very own pizza/bread oven as a BBQ extension in your own back garden!

If anyone else wants to jump in then thats great - I will message you my email. Weather is looking like 'not rain' for the bank holiday weekend, so hoping it stays that way!

Hi, I was hoping to ask anyone going this weekend a favour. DH has - finally - said we can get a tent (unbelievably reluctant camper!) and no surprise but he is not convinced by the bell tent I have my eye on :(

We would both really appreciate the opportunity to see the tents in action to help us make a decision. I am after a 5m Soulpad and he is taken by the Vango Tigris (600?). We are going to be in the area over the weekend and NettleTea has very kindly said it would be ok for us to pop on site at some point. So....we would be very grateful if anyone happened to have the above tents or similar and would be happy to let us look around and maybe even enthuse about your tent to us!

MisSalLaneous · 24/08/2011 14:46

Uhm Redundent, we're a bit sloppy campers, so not sure if it would do more harm than good, but if no-one else around (with bigger tent / more organised etc), you're welcome (but warned!) to look around our 4m bell. Ours is Obelink (like Belltent UK), but they're all pretty similar, really.

oranges123 · 24/08/2011 15:40

We are not able to join the bank holiday meet sadly (maybe next year?) but I am just popping in to say to Redundant that what will swing it your way will be your DH seeing how quickly a soulpad or other bell tent goes up compared to any other family tent, no doubt including the Vango. So, if you can find out when everyone is arriving, that will definitely be the time to swing by.

Failing that, if you are anywhere near Bodiam in East Sussex next Friday we will be pitching our 5m Obelink bell tent in Park Farm campsite and you are welcome to come watch. Grin

RedundantTautology · 24/08/2011 15:59

MisSalLaneous Thank you, that's very kind of you. Don't worry, we are not very organised ourselves so quite blind to others' chaos!

oranges that's a very kind offer, thank you. Unfortunately DH is working on Friday so not free till Saturday. You are right, I am hoping pitch time will work hugely in my favour, especially as we will start (and possibly finish!) with weekend camping at most. Have fun this weekend and fingers crossed for the weather :)

NettleTea · 24/08/2011 20:31

Well you should have all seen my 4+ hours to pitch the tipi today!!
3 people with barely a clue between them, and what is supposedly the definative book on tipis.
Its up, and its the best pitch we have done so far (3rd attempt) but I think that the major flaw is that I have pitched in the traditional egg shape, and the tipi has been made more circular than this, so its a bit high at the front. No matter as we have the liner, and the canvas is supposed to be off the ground, but I am certainly glad its done. Its not a weekend tent, I fear. Next year I am putting it up somewhere hidden and keeping it up for at least 2 months!
Am thinking of popping the 3m Albion Canvas tipi/bell up for the kids next to it, now that DOES go up in 20 mins or so.....

RedundantTautology · 24/08/2011 20:51

4 hours Shock I'll cross that one off the list then!

NettleTea · 24/08/2011 21:32

we didnt even get a cupof tea!!

OP posts:
feetheart · 24/08/2011 21:39

If you want a bell tent steer your DH clear of us with our old KhyamXXL - that goes up pretty quickly, it just takes ages to move the crap stuff from car to tent :)

Pizza oven sounds brilliant, have added flour, yeast and old baking tray to camping list :o
DH (and DC) like building things so will point them in direction of construction.

NettleTea · 24/08/2011 22:30

Cant guarantee that it will be working by the end of the weekend tho- Ive never made one myself so it should be interesting.
When you get to the farm you need to look out for this on your left hand side where the road starts to go bendy

OOOH, just realised that I am going to get to try out all my camping goodies - my Icey-tek, my new Dozers, my campingaz bivouac set and the landmann tripod grill!!!! I think I am getting a little bit excited now. My sister is coming too, with her OH and little girl
