  • they come in a variety of colours

  • they have icey-tek in big letters on the front (celestial mating of ice and technology) = deeply awesome

  • you can accessorise them with a seat pad and well turn them into a seat

  • if you were being attacked by a bear* you could climb up a tree with your icey tek and drop it on the bear's head. The weight would stun the bastard and you could make your escape
*does not work with bears that can climb trees

  • they have drainage holes in the bottom (that can be plugged with the provided plugs) so if space in the car becomes tight you could use it as a car seat/ bed for a baby

  • you could turn it into a swimming pool for a stoat.

DH has said "Get one" I think the idea of bringing food back and freezing it swayed him... that and the fact it's my money, so it's my choice :)
Now I need to work out what size we need.

Since when were there bears in North Wales?

glitterkitty · 05/06/2011 21:40

Can I just say I'm deeply envious of your Germany/Austria extravaganza. Have been planning just this trip for years . Whats your itinery?

Slubberdegullion · 05/06/2011 21:48

Ooooooh

That didn't take long Grin

The rare non tree climbing bears of N Wales were reintroduced to the wild in 1987 following a successful breeding programme in Algeria (similar terrain). Johnny Ball did an excellent documentary on them a few years back. Shy but violent creatures iirc. Dropping a (well made) cool box on them will usually deter a full blown attack.

Glitter - Rhine from sea to source and then wherever takes our fancy.

glitterkitty · 05/06/2011 21:51

Hope you manage to avoid the flies of the black forest.

I am deeply jealous.

Wait till DS is old enough for hours of car bound tedium. Then we'll see.

OP posts:
Slubberdegullion · 05/06/2011 21:52

Are they bad?

Do I need a mossie net hat adaption?

SparklyCloud · 05/06/2011 21:59

Slubber where are you goig in nwales if you don't mind me asking? We go for 2 nights here and there. Always looking for nice places in Wales/Anglesey.

glitterkitty · 05/06/2011 22:00

Noooo.... not bad...more.... spooky.

We parked up in black forest. For picnic. Nice forest glade- walked off to explore. Came back to find car covered in flies. Silent black flies. I have never forgotten it.

Maybe it was just our car?

Lake Titisee has a great campsite. Lovely lovely, you are lucky.

bilblio · 05/06/2011 22:08

I've obviously never come across these bears as we stick to Anglesey and they'd struggle to cross the menai straits.

I've decided on a red 25l one, as I've worked out it's bigger than the rubbish one we already have.

Thanks for this thread glitterkitty, and saving me from buying another rubbish cool box... and for the pom bear

Wonders if no tree climbing bears like pom bears... because I don't :o

Slubberdegullion · 05/06/2011 22:12

Blimey. Silent car flies do indeed sound spooky. yy we are very lucky, trip of a lifetime hopefully.

Sparkly we have just been to Hirdre Fawr site on the Lleyn. Lovely, ticked all our boxes.
Nantcol waterfalls near Harlech is also fab.

Slubberdegullion · 05/06/2011 22:18

You can't stand a bottle of wine up in the 25l!
[wierd sense of deja vu]

You are safe in Anglesey as the bears suffer from terrible gephyrophobia. Mind you, you have to watch out for the salt water crocodiles over there.

bilblio · 05/06/2011 22:37

Wine makes me thirsty, I drink cider.... Somerset, Devon and Cornwall are also favourite destinations, but not this year, I can't deal with the temptation...

This thread is beginning to remind me of the time I convinced an american that the UK's largest environmental hazard was wolves.

glitterkitty · 05/06/2011 22:42

Ticks. Thats what you have to watch out for.

Ticks and those big hairy catapillars.

OP posts:
Funtimewincies · 05/06/2011 23:10

I had one of those big hairy caterpillars fall in my beans . I made it spit them out.

Living in North Wales, I can confirm that the bears are only a danger to people who think that it's essential to make your camping space 'individual'. They can't resist a bit of bunting Grin.

A well-aimed ice pack (any type) does indeed see them off though.

Slubberdegullion · 06/06/2011 09:18

hahahahahaha so true about the bears loving a bit of bunting.

glitter I have my tick removing special tweezers. Are the ticks especially bad in the black forest? Am still fretting over getting the encephalitis jab. I DID however spot some specially impregnated anti tick socks in this months c&cc mag. Good buy or will just standard socks repel them?

Biblio, the icey tek also cools cider and perry. It is multi alcoholic beverage cooling versatile on that front have no fear.

glitterkitty · 07/06/2011 12:23

The Icey Tek will arrive WEDS AM I am thrilled.

OP posts:
DontCallMeBaby · 07/06/2011 16:22

Sob - I don't think I can have an Icey Tek. For some reason I've got this idea that the 25L won't fit a wine bottle :o and that is absolutely crucial for me ... and the 40L is HUGE isn't it? It's not much smaller than the dimensions of DD's Ikea table we have in the living room, and I'm looking at it and thinking if I took delivery of something that size and told DH it was our new coolbox he'd think I'd lost my mind. Especially if it was pink.

Lovecat · 07/06/2011 17:03

Would it fit a wine box?

Win-win situation, cold wine, MORE wine? :o

PandaG · 07/06/2011 17:07

buy wine box - take bag out of wine box, it will magically fit flat round the rest of yuour food!

nb as we have a gas fridge this is not a problem for us!

Slubberdegullion · 07/06/2011 17:57

That is very exciting glitter.

Baby (I'm going to call you that evn though your moniker says not to as it is quicker- although not so much now I have typed this great long Schpeel in the brackets) have you looked on the icey tek website? There is a page where you can see all the things that will fit in each one. You can fit the tall beer bottles in the 25l, or a bottle on its side, or the colostomy bag of wine as Panda suggests.

I wouldn't worry about dh questioning your sanity tbh, when you provide him with an icey cold alcoholic beverage on like day 4 and you haven't been once to swap the ice blocks then he will be singing your coolbox buying prowess from the rooftops.

I don't think you can get them in pink though.

DontCallMeBaby · 07/06/2011 20:10

Ooh ... wine on its side. Diagonally perhaps. Hang on ...

SparklyCloud · 07/06/2011 20:17

Thanks Slubber, they both look lovely :)

DontCallMeBaby · 07/06/2011 22:49

Oh, I just nearly did it ... then had a last baulk at the price (and the delivery!) plus it was promising to deliver on Thursday and I really don't need a coolbox on Thursday. The next time I camp it'll be a festival and I'm not sure it would be safe ... but I do need to keep my wine bag cool!
