Camping related gift ideas, please?

Its BILs birthday this week and am a bit stumped for ideas but .....they are buying a giant starter tent kit to go away next weekend - you know the tent, airbed, sleeping bag kind of thing- they probably dont have much else as they have borrowed stuff when they have been camping before.

I am not a camper by any stretch of the imagination .... so, any ideas for something useful, vaguely personal and ideally small (they have a tiny car and big kids/dog!) that I can pick up on the high street would be gratefully received.

Budget £30-40 ish. Thanks!

We have one of these bought for DH's bday last year. We're upgrading to a bell tent now so won't need it, but if he's camping in a nylon tent it is amazing. It means you don't have to rush out of your tent for fresh air first thing in the morning, and is a good ceiling light too.

This rechargeable lantern is fab.

What about one of those leatherman pocket tool thingies? My DH has one (it was expensive but they do various different sorts at different prices) and he finds it really handy when we are camping. Also it is more personal to him than, say, a cooker which would be something else they could probably do with. The rechargeable lamp is a great idea too though - Decathlon also do one which we found really good on our last trip.

By the way, it is a fair bit more expensive and probably not ideal if they are trying to save space in their car but if in the future you ever need another camping-related present for your BIL or another man (or a woman in many cases) go for a Kelly Kettle - my DH LOVES his. www.kellykettle.com

Actually not so pricey now I look. I forgot I bought all the cooking set and bells and whistles which he has never really used...

A comfy camping chair, some are quite expensive and I would consider a luxury.

I wish someone would buy me one for my birthday.

I have just bought a mini Italian coffee maker for DH to take camping. I got the Bialetti one as recommended on here and elsewhere.

Watch out though, I think the "3 cup" one is only one medium-sized cup really - but as DH is the only coffee drinker that is plenty for him.

cheaper than a leatherman but same idea I got dh one of these years ago as were recommended as had good pliers and folds small - it does feel sturdy..

I would get a cardboard box and fill it up with silly but useful items, like;

box of matches
dustpan & brush
washing up bowl
washing up liquid & sponge
tea towel
medium sized frying pan
a pair of thick/padded socks
afew tins of soup
tea bags/coffee
sugar
torch
camping magazine

One thing I would say dunno were you would buy it. A mallet thing to bash the pegs in, you can get one that has a thing on the other side to help get the pegs out. I think I saw them in tescos. We lost some our pegs we couldnt get them out of the ground.

Insulated cups. Microfibre towels - they are fab, esp Life Venture ones, get the Giant one - might even be £25 but we use ours a lot - great for any travel or the beach and especially good for camping as they dry really quickly and they pack down so small.

I got a mallet (nicely wrapped, mind you) for Mother's Day this year from my husband the dc's. slinks off to relationships forum....

I saw somewhere recently a folding knife with a wooden handle that was £30 I think.
