A dear friend died very recently, and his widow has asked DH to help her sell their 1974 VW camper - which was friends last beloved project.

DH is very good at selling cars (hence why he was asked), but we need advice on specialist websites / mags to advertise her in. Autotrader will not have the right sort of people looking, as we imagine this is perfect for surfers etc.

If you wanted to buy one, where would you look? (Trying to avoid the perils of Ebay if possible).

Any advice very greatfully received.

TIA :)

there are some VW magazines around

www.volksworld.com/ for example.

you could also try googling to see if you have any VW owner clubs in your area, and garages that specialise in old VW's too.

If it was his project was he going solo or was he in touch with other local enthusiasts too. If he was good friends with some of the local VW obsessives owners they may be willing to help you with this.

Also worth looking to see if you have any local VW shows coming up (depends on your location) and taking it along to that, though check rules for selling/advertising it there.

I'd say first place to start is a local specialist garage if you can, they always know of people who will buy them, especially if they are resto projects as opposed to runners. They may be willing to help advise on a good price to accept for it too........though beware, our two mechanics are great but they only work on them and don't trade, the bloke up the road who has a forecourt full of them offered us well below value for ours. We didn't end up selling it because DH is too attached to it but a private sale will get you a better return. your DH will know that though if he's good at selling cars - it's just that this is a niche market.

Thank you - will check out your link.

It is/was a runner (tempermental though) and he was doing bits on his own as a way to fill his time (was ill). They have replaced the bed cusions/foam, played with internal things and had various bits of work done on the engine/body. She looks beautiful (powder blue) but needs more doing, although does have an MOT etc. There is a local "bug club man" who was going to help but has been too busy.

DH is going to google local rallys etc. We have a large motorhome show nearby later in the year, but they are the huge vans (that DH hankers for!).

I said we should drive it around nearby campsites this bank Holiday with a For Sale sign attached. It always pulled admirers when we went camping with them. Grin

Funnily enough my DH hankers after a VW camper... not going to happen!

but I did see some for sale and prices vary. Iirc it was vivastreet website that I stumbled upon yesterday while looking for caravans.

If you can, try to get someone from 'bug club' to help you - they will give you ideas of prices etc.

So not showing this thread to DH!

Milliways · 22/05/2011 17:19

Thank you, will look at vivastreet.

Just looking at placing adverts on Volksworld - not bad or £27 but can only upload one photo! DH is used to loads of photos and Modern cars!

The Bug Club did give her an indication price, so we know what we are aiming for at least.

It is/was a runner (tempermental though)

Grin at that - it's a VW. temperamental is a given. if we've got the window wipers on and indicate left they stop until we turn the indicator off.

Milliways · 22/05/2011 18:28

Grin Yup!

We thought it would be nice if the coffin arrived at the church in the VW, but as big hills were involved we thought the idea of him NOT arriving were too great!

Been out of the vw scene for a year or so but the justkampers website was always our first port of call think the forums had a for sale section too or the type 2 owners club.

Milliways · 22/05/2011 19:02

Thank you - will check that out too. :)

Just speaking to dh and we bought ours from a website called dubs4sale (and sold it on the same site 5yrs later!)

My sister has one and they always read vwcamper and bus. They have lots of adverts in the back - I quite enjoy reading it when I'm round there. I'd buy a copy, read up a bit and see what they are going for, as with no knowledge you could end up not doing as well as you might on it.
