Roof box or trailer?

we've realized that we cannot fit 5 people plus camping stuff for a week in a Ford Mondeo so need additional transport space. Not sure if trailer is best or a roofbox. There are pros and cons to both but I wondered what other people do?

Roofbox, we've got room to store one of those when not in use, but not a trailer. It is harder to load up than a trailer would be though and our big tent doesn't fit in it / is too heavy to lift up there.

Roofbox and put all clothes towels blankets sleeping bags ie bulky light stuff up there. If box is clean, literally pack into roof box not bags for most room.
Then heavy stuff in boot like tent wellies food.

Ok - I think we have to go for a roof box although it is more expensive. I think we'll be able to store it in the loft (no garage) if we get a narrow one. Thought it'd be good for light but bulky things (buckets and spades, bedding etc) and maybe windbreak and will leave space in car for coolbox, tent, cooker etc

Thank you!

We have a roofbox (Citroen Picasso and 3 DC so similar to you). We put all the sleeping bags, airbeds etc up there as they take up a lot of room but aren't heavy.

I thought roofboxes used alot more fuel than trailers. May be wrong though!

Grockle · 02/05/2011 20:41

The reviews of the ones I've read reckon they don't significantly increase fuel consumption and since our other option is taking 2 cars, a small increase is better than that!

both Grin

Cathycat · 02/05/2011 22:32

Both!

RubberDuck · 02/05/2011 22:33

Go for trailer then just think "fuck it" and buy a trailer tent. Then if you really like that, get the folding camper (get to take your kitchen sink with you then Wink and then before you know it, you know how to tow properly and just give up and get the caravan.

Grockle · 02/05/2011 22:34

I fear that will be our best solution!

That was in response to 'both'... I will never be a caravanner!

That's a good point, actually. No plans to go away but we often go on a ferry (only tiny little one but still costs extra with trailer) and we may venture to the Isle of Wight. Roof box easier to store so think we'll go with that.

Thanks for all the help

I hoovered my roof box today, and jiffed the exterior.

Came up lovely.

Grockle · 13/05/2011 22:02

We got a roofbox in the end. A big but half-width one which should really help. I'll remember the jiff, Slubber Grin
