How can I waterproof my tent that refuses to be waterproof?

We inherited a tent from my Dsis after a washed-out camping trip when she vowed never to go camping ever again. The first time we used it we had 24 hours of torrential rain and the tent gave up. We got some waterproofing stuff in a tin from a camping shop and painted it on according to the instructions, gave it two coats, left the tent up in the garden for a couple of nights and concluded that it hadn't waterproofed. Tbh this was last year so I can't remember too clearly why we decided that. But I know it wasn't just that it had a bit of condensation inside, as I know that's normal.

Any ideas what I can do? It's a great tent and we don't really want to have to buy another one. I was wondering if I can get it waterproofed professionally so I know that it'll hold out.

Often camping shops will provide a waterproofing service for tents. I think the last one we saw was for £15.
