We went a couple of years ago and stayed in a cottage. It's an odd place but well worth the visit. The pace of life is much slower and takes some getting used to. Eating out is really expensive, and touristy stuff is few and far between - virtually no good tea shops and not much in the way of either local crafts or even tourist tat. Castle Rushen is the best castle I've ever visited (and I've been to a lot), and Moores Manx kippers in Peel are to die for. Not a great deal to do unless you're heavily into walking, but I'd definitely go again. And again.

Unless you are very into motorbikes AVOID TT Week (end May/beg June I think) and Grand Prix Week (August sometime)

Have stayed on a very mad farm campsite just outside Onchan/Douglas as close to my brother's but you'd need to be hardcore - v basic toilets/showers, chickens (and bl**dy roosters) everywhere and slightly bonkers owners. DC thought it was great :)
