I stayed at Boat of Garten last year and it was nice and quiet but you are surrounded by static caravans so it's not the most scenic site. Glenmore, on the other hand, is in the most gorgeous location.

We are actually off to Aviemore in a couple of weeks so I will clearly have to spend some time 'evaluating' the Mountain Cafe cakes! And then doing comparisons at Inshriach, for fairness ;-).

PiffPaff, if you get bored let me know and I'll lend you my children so I can sleep to entertain and amuse with their local knowledge Grin

oh do update with your cake thoughts later!

there is a nice, if expensive, cafe/bistro run by the rothiemurchus estate next to the farm shop.

i shall be looking out for a tente enorme if i am that neck of the woods!

Seafood Chowder at the Mountain Cafe is to die for.

Piffpaffpoff · 22/02/2011 19:41

Doric, do you know why the cafe at Rothiemurchus shop has changed its name again? Snuck up for a day trip skiing the other week and noticed it's now the Druidh? Its getting to be a running joke between me and DH about what its going to be called every time we come up! Is it still the same people (and - more importantly - the same cakes) as when it was Ord Ban?

And thanks for the offer of your kids and their knowledge, I'll politely decline this time! How could I ever get bored with so much forest to cycle round and cake shops to explore (although I must admit, it comes close when we are on station visit no6 of the fortnight to enable DS to admire the shiny blue steam train yet again......)

Oh, and sorry, one more question. Is the wee restaurant in Boat of G (is it Andersons?) any good? Keep meaning to go there but it never seems to be open the days we have grandparents with us to babysit!

DuplicitousBitch · 22/02/2011 20:38

maybe they hope you will forget how much it cost last time

Piffpaffpoff · 22/02/2011 20:43

Ha ha ha! Very true.

pissedrightoff · 22/02/2011 20:55

Piffpaffpoff I think the guys that had Ord Ban are elsewhere now but still on the 'Ski Road', I'll look into it for you.

Thisisyesterday Have you tried Boat Of Garten campsite?

pissedrightoff · 22/02/2011 20:56

Also 'Andersons' is really good.

doricpatter · 23/02/2011 08:34

The folk who ran Ord Ban have moved on but I think it's still the same chef. pissedrightoff, are you thinking of Mor, the cafe at Glenmore? Because the guy who cooked at the Druidh is now up there - not sure where the Ord Ban people have gone.

Do you know we've never been to Anderson's yet although I've never heard a bad word about the place.

fluffles · 23/02/2011 08:44

glenmore for a big tent.

rotheimurchus has hard standing for caravans and then a lovely little camping spot in the trees that you have to walk across a bridge to - lovely but not suitable for big tents and you can't park right next to the tent either as it's properly in the woods.

glenmore is more like a big field.. but still nice.

pissedrightoff · 23/02/2011 20:10

doricpatter yes thats where I was thinking of, I thought it was the same people, delicious cakes all the same (saying that, I never met a cake I did'nt like)
