He'll be 3 1/2 and I'll be on my own with him as DH is a pansy doesn't 'do' the outdoors. I'd like somewhere smallish and quiet but with a playground and a shop and with a nice sand and rockpool beach nearby. I'm in the north London area and don't really want to travel more than 2 hours away, so I'm thinking maybe Suffolk, Sussex or Kent.

Thanks.

Bumping for you! Can't help as I'm in Ireland and haven't even brought my own kids camping yet but one of the UK camping crew should be around at some point!

uk campsite are helpful.
We are North London and have been to Norfolk lots (its 2.5-3 hours or so to the Cromer/west Runton area). Manor Farm there is not small, but it is well-run, very near the beach, good toilets/showers/washing up areas and has a playground by the camping field (assuming you are not taking a dog - there is a separate field for campers with dogs). No shop but supermarket 2 mins walk away.
We've also stayed near Frinton beach in Essex (sandy, but check tide times as no beach at high tide) - Strangers Home Inn site = field behind pub, play area in pub garden, cheap pub meals...small shop.
We've also stayed near Camber (East Sussex/Kent), which is only about 2 hours unless the Dartford crossing is slow...we used a nice quiet site called I think Romney Farm - no playground, but again quiet site, has microwave/fridge/freezer/BBQs to borrow in a little shed which is handy (we kept icecreams in the freezer...)

These recommendations are useful, thank you. I am also looking for somewhere for a night or two for our first camping trip, but I was thinking of somewhere that rented you a teepee or yurt. Does anyone know of anywhere like that, again not too far from north london?

Thanks - seems there are a lot of us gagging to get out of north London!

I was going to recommend Manor Farm!!!

We went last year with 3yr old DD, beautiful site, extremely clean, plenty of hot water etc in showers and since they don't have 'pitches' as such you can pretty much choose your own patch, they have a recommended minimum space between tents.

We love camping and find this website really honest for reviews

good luck, and i bet your DH will come with you once you start to organise it Wink

Thanks for the recommendations. I'll check out the websites when I have a moments peace. Frinton sounds promising for a first few nights away - especially the pub aspect Wink
