Are most sleeping bags machine washable?

Ds1 went camping on a school trip last night and has come home with a damp and muddy sleeping bag. ( Tent flooded!)

I can't see any washing instructions, we got the sleeping bag from freecyle and I'm not familiar with the brand but ds1 was impressed with it as it kept him warm so I don't want to ruin it.

Can I put it in the washing machine? Can I tumble dry it?

Hi chipmonkey. :) Does it look like a really expensive one?

I've washed ds's and our cheap sleeping bags on the delicate cycle a couple of time, and it was fine. I haven't tumble dried it though.

I know down sleeping bags can't be washed, which is what has put me off those before.

Hmm, realise my "cheap" comment looks odd - I mean if not too expensive looking, I would risk it (well, I did with ours). If too big a risk, it's up to you and a wet flannel Wink

Oh I'm talking complete rubbish (and getting slightly obsessed about your post!) - apparently down can be carefully handwashed too - here

chipmonkey · 11/09/2010 20:59

well, you see, Sal, careful handwashing doesn't happen here!Grin

Really don't think it's down. Will probably risk it! But probably not the dryer.

Should be fine as i washed mine and it came out good.

MisSalLaneous · 11/09/2010 21:02

Grin Yep, in my books careful handwashing = just don't do it!

The sleeping bag was surprisingly dry after the spin cycle, so it shouldn't be too bad. Good luck, will keep my fingers crossed!

should be fine. in case you are not sure you can use delicate cycle and detergent. most sleeping bags are polyester with cotton lining and wash well.

Our Tesco value one can be washed, instructions say at 30C

Thanks so much, all! At least he didn't lose the thing. He has come home minus his torch, knife and fork which is not bad for The Scattiest Boy In The World.
