How many tents do you have?

This weekend I took the kids away on my own - so just 3 of us - in a massive 8-man tent. Now this makes sense on a holiday - there are four of us with dh, lots of clothes and stuff, a portaloo goes in one of the bedrooms because dd1 is disabled and there is often not an accessible loo nearby

but as I packed it this weekend someone said 'oh, are you taking the big one, I have a selection' and I thought really? Do people have more than one?

Do you have more than one? If so, what do you have?

I have 2 - very large 9 person tent with 3 sleeping pods and a large living area and a much smaller 5 man tent with one sleeping area and small living area.

Cappster · 16/08/2010 16:17

how many of you are there?

Depends - dh is not able to come with us so can be between 3 and 5 depending if we are joined by family. Ds is now 14 so I dont suppose we can take the tent with just one sleeping pod now anyway.

domesticsluttery · 16/08/2010 16:23

We have 2 Blush

One was our "starter tent", it was cheap and cheerful and bought the other year to see if we liked camping.

The other one is bigger and better.

Although the starter tent is only 4 man it has 2 bedrooms and the 3 DC can sleep together in one quite comfortably. It is very quick to put up and down so is good for 1 night trips. It is also good for the boys and their friends to use in the garden.

The bigger one is more waterproof, there is more room and it is generally more pleasant, but it takes a lot longer to put up and down. So it is better for stays of 2 nights+ when you need more than just somewhere to sleep.

We have two. Our first tent - that technically belongs to my son as it was his birthday present last year when I first took him camping - is a small cheapo 4 man. Ok for a few nights when there's no danger of rain.

This year I have splashed out and bought a 4m bell tent, which is huge and beautiful and MINE!

Four of us can camp together with lots of space in that one, but I imagine my son will use his one more as he gets older - particularly if we go with friends, or if he wants a bit of privacy.

gladbag · 16/08/2010 17:12

We have two.We are a family of three, me, dh and ds.

Our big tent is a fabby outwell bear lake which is fantastic for 3 weeks in France, and has loads of space. But I can't actually lift either of the two enormous bags it comes in, and it takes the two of us forever to put up. This makes weekend camping, or festival going, a pain so this year we bought a quechua pop-up 4 man tent as well. It's a tight fit, even for 3 of us, but goes up in 5 mins and is so light and small that it's a joy, and it copes well in heavy rain. And I can pitch it by myself if it's just ds and me.

mungo8 · 16/08/2010 18:28

We have 3 Blush. There are 4 of us we have a big heavy Wynnster 8 man tent (we haven't used as if we pack it then we would have to leave the kids behind to make room as it is big and heavy) We have a Vango icarus 5 and canopy which is fab and is our preferred tent at the moment as we don't mind all sleeping together it is light and really easy to put up and take down. in the future we will have to use the bigger 8 man as it has 3 bedrooms DD and DS wont be able to share for much longer it takes ages to put up. And then we have a little dome tent. It does seem a bit extravagant though Smile

stripeyknickersspottysocks · 16/08/2010 18:58

Seven and a camper van.

Big outwell tunnel tent.
Two small tunnel tents, exactly same model. Me snd dh had the same tents when we met.
Quechua pop up
Khyam driveaeay awning.
Small cheap two man dome tent
Sun something medium size tent that i got in emergency on holiday when i broke the kyham one.

Currently sat in van on lovely site in devon with great seaview

MisSalLaneous · 16/08/2010 19:05

Vango Orchy 500 which was our first tent. Used once Blush

4m bell, which I love.

Quencha Base Seconds Full which we intend to use as day tent / kitchen thingy when it rains.

ProfessorLaytonIsMyLoveSlave · 16/08/2010 19:34

Two or three, depending on how you count. We have a 6-man tent that we use for whole-family camping and a 2-3 man tent that DH and DS use when the two of them go off for a week camping with everything on the back of a bicycle. We also have an elderly 2-3 man tent that DH and I used to use but that has rather given up the ghost on being reliably waterproof so we don't really use it now.

Am tempted to get another 2-3 man tent so that we can do 1-2 night trips without having to lug the big tent along. Maybe if there's a good deal in the off-season sales...

stinkypinky · 16/08/2010 19:43

4, soon to buy no.5.

Vango Icarus 500 plus canopy

Vango Peace 800 (for me to play glamping - could not afford a real teepee)

Vango Juno 300 (for DD1)

Quechua Base Seconds (as utility)

There are 4 of us - me, DH, DD1 (4) and DD2 (3 mths)

We are hoping to buy an Outwell Vermont XL at end of season.

MollieO · 16/08/2010 19:48

We have 4 Blush

1 x 3 man tent Sunncamp Tarn 300(purchased when I knew nothing about tents and I can't put it up by myself)
1 x 2 man tent Eurohike Dart (bought because of difficulty with 3 man tent)
1 x 2 man pop up tent Outwell (bought in sale and too big for car!)
1 x 4m bell tent

I have thought about getting another tent that is easier to put up but have decided to get to grips with the 3 man tent. The other week someone took pity on me and helped pitch it but I'm determined to do it myself this weekend (only have ds aged 6 to 'help').

We've got 5 atm. Small 6 berth that was our 'starter tent' but you could only stand up in the middle and there was no SIG so very draughty. A (cheapy Tesco) 2-man that I got to take the dcs away for a night with friends but that was a real squeeze so when I saw a 3-man really cheap I bought it but have never used it Blush. Then we got our lovely Vango which is roomy/warm etc but a pig to put up so this year we've replaced it with a Khyam quick-erect which is smaller but easier.

I suppose we are going to have to sell the Vango...

3plusbump · 16/08/2010 21:59

We've got 2.
An Outwell Norfolk Lake which is the big family holiday tent and a cheapo argos special 4 man tent which we use for quick one night trips when fewer of us go.

Shodan · 16/08/2010 22:09

One.

It's a green one. With beigey bits inside.

Ineed2 · 17/08/2010 19:44

We have 4:
An Outdoor Revolution Scenic 7 for main hols.
A Base seconds 4.1 for short breaks or only 3 when OH is working.
An Outwell Jersey M, for when I have to go in a small tent! Or am being kind to the DC's
An Outwell jersey S for all other pup tent requirments.

dearprudence · 17/08/2010 19:50

three and a motor home.

Wilts · 17/08/2010 19:52

We have two:
Outwell Hartford Xl - Too big only used twice and currently gathering dust in the loft.
Hi gear Mojave 5- Smaller, more practical and very easy to pitch.

Jux · 17/08/2010 20:06

We hang on to our old tents, and people give us their old tents. We are a house of many tents.

From one man tunnel type things up to 6 man hooped thingy and much in between. We also have a camper van.

The two-man dome is up in the garden atm, for dd's delectation and delight. She won't like it next time she goes in though, as she's left the doors open and it will be full of ... er s-things and other bugs. Thus we learn. Mwah hah hah hah.

sethstarkaddersmum · 19/08/2010 09:57

5 so far:
-Sunncamp Calypso XL - big but no good in the rain (well what did we bloody expect, it's called a Sunncamp after all)
-dh's old 2-man dome
-dh's old backpacking tent
-my old backpacking tent, which is a Phoenix Phlighter and was very swish in 1989
-cheapy 2-man tent from Argos bought by dh for no reason whatsoever

and our new Outwell Hartford L arriving today, hopefully.

Slubberdegullion · 19/08/2010 10:18

ummm

5 I think now, and two tarps.

The Cabanon
The polycotton utility
The noisy horrid nylon utility (which I am keeping just in case we so some sort of camp which requires a loo, then I have a toliet tent as well as my kitchen tent)
The two Outwell pop ups

I did get rid of my 20 year old two man in the big garage/ramekin clear out

rastababi · 19/08/2010 14:01

We have 4.

A 2-birth igloo/festival type one from when I was about 15.

A 4-birth regular tent, about 8 years old.

A 1970s 6-birth tent that Dh bought for £7! (it's fab!)

A 10-birth yurt/bell tent.

Chesterado · 19/08/2010 16:40

We have 4 and counting

  • ultra lightweight trekking type thing
  • cheapo 2 man Eurohike dome tent veteran of many muddy Glastonburys and more or less in tatters
  • another Eurohike/Blacks 2 man dome tent for less messy festivals
  • 4 man Vango for holidays.

That was just for me and DH. Now that DD has arrived we can legitimately get the big Outwell we've had our eye on, but she's only 8 weeks old right now so prob won't get to use it until next year sadly

Makes me think we need a tent audit....

sethstarkaddersmum · 22/08/2010 22:18

ok, I thought we had 5, 6 incl the new one. Turns out we have 9: dh has one more backpacking one than I thought and it turns out he bought 3 of the cheapy Argos ones, not just 1 Hmm

We also have 2 play tents incl a nice teepee that a child could sleep in if they wanted.

sethstarkaddersmum · 22/08/2010 22:18

oh, and a couple of fishing shelters/beach tents.
