How many should I aim to eat for breakfast, lunch and dinner?

That depends on you and also depends on whether you also snack.

Personally I find 1,200 way too few calories and I generally eat between 1,300 - 1,600.

I like to eat a good breakfast so that is usually egg based and approx 250-350 calories. This means I am full so don't snack.

Lunch is usually salad or sandwich based (lean chicken or ham with lots of salad and is usually a similar number of calories to breakfast.

Mid afternoon I might have a biscuit and a cup of tea (approx 100-150 calories in total)

Then the rest at tea time. Usually grilled fish/chicken, jacket potato/wedges (I don't eat pasta or grains) & salad/veg.

I have to eat 1200 or less so I feel your pain.
I don't eat breakfast and have 500 for lunch and 500 for dinner with the extra 200 for a snack or a glass of wine.

I usually work backwards. I log my dinner for that day first. Then I know how much is left for breakfast and dinner. I find I can have a slice of buttered toast for breakfast and dinner, followed by a dinner and small piece of chocolate. If the dinner is calorific, I skip breakfast to balance it out.

I do the following with some examples

250 - 300 breakfast - Greek yoghurt + fruit, porridge, 30g muesli + low fat yogurt

350 lunch - 2 egg omelette, 30g cheese, red pepper + onion with a small salad. Soup and small roll. Chicken or tuna salad.

350-450 dinner - I have been eating 'prepped pots' meals. Or Jacket Potato, salad, small portion spag bol, chilli etc

150 treat/snack - small chocolate bar, packet of crisps, couple of biscuits with tea etc

I do 1200 and manage fine personally, however I skip breakfast have a lunch of either high fibre porridge or omelette (made with 1 egg and 2 egg whites for example) these are usually under 300 cals. Dinner I have something like fish/chichen, veg/chili with cauliflower rice which is generally around 500 cals. Snacks include fruit with peanut butter, Greek yogurt with fruit or protein puddings if I am feeling particularly hungry. I often have enough for a small glass of pinot and plenty of skimmed milk for tea throughout the day.
