My Fitness Pal for exercise calories - accurate?

I’ve been logging all food/drink and exercise for the last six weeks or so. My exercise is only walking, I calculated that I walk at 3.0 miles per hour, which I then enter into MFP and it calculates calories burnt for me.

I don’t eat my exercise calories, as I am trying to lose weight, but how accurate do you think the calculation is? For example, I walked at 3.0mph today for 80 minutes, which MFP has calculated at 274 calories burnt. This seems in the high side to me - What do you think? I am 5 foot 1 and 9st11lb.

impossible to know without knowing your exact body composition, but have always taken 1/3 off the estimates as they are always way too high for me.

MFP is a little high I think, but it's a useful guide as long as you don't eat back the calories.

I'm 5.2 and 9 stone and reckon I walk at 3.5 miles/hour and my phone tells me that's 7,500 steps.

Thanks. I don’t know how I would check whether they’re coming out as too high for me. I have no idea what my body composition is, but I’m very lumpy and bumpy, no time at all, carry my weight on my stomach, bum and legs.

I don't count my exercise. I have set my profile as being moderately active so those are already accounted for. I lose about a pound a week on 1650cals though I always go over due to lack of willpower.

I am losing a pound a week on 1200 calories a day and a lot of walking. I have a BMI of 26.something and about a stone to lose before I have a healthy BMI. I am only 5 foot 1 so my TDEE is really low.

I just don’t know whether the exercise cals on MFP are accurate for me, or just how inaccurate.

I couldn't be certain but they do seem to calculate it quite high to me. I've just restarted on MFP having used it successfully in the past. I like to calculate and enter my exercise calories but more for motivation than to eat them back as I don't think it's that accurate tbh.

I think they are quite high. I have my Fitbit linked but I still think it over estimates calories burned. I don’t eat my exercise calories though

I think they wayyy over estimate. I never eat back the exercise calories

fallfallfall · 12/05/2022 04:58

Even the food calories are “allowed” to be off by 10%. that can quickly change things.

They're definitely on the high side. For maximum impact I don't eat back all exercise calories. I have them in reserve so that if I'm over by 10/20 at the end of the day it's not a problem. I don't count them in my daily allowance as such
