Losing weight through food and NOT exercise

Has anyone successfully lost a large amount of weight (more than 3stone) with diet alone?

Don't get me wrong, I am definitely moving more, making more of an effort to be more active. But I hate to actual exercise. Anything I start, I give up.

I'm hoping to use my hate of exercise as my carrot to keep to the healthy eating, knowing that if I can lose 2lbs or so a week then I don't need to hit the gym.

I expect that when I have lost weight I will find exercise more enjoyable.

Has anyone done this successfully?

Apparently weight loss is 80% diet and 20% diet.
You could lose weight without exercising if you eat healthy and have a calorie deficit.
However, if you exercise, even a little with the diet changes, you will tone up as you go and Burn more calories, that will speed up weight loss.
I'd suggest, starting small, even walking more each day or a 10 minute work out on you tube and work from there .

Not me but a friend and my sil have nothing lost weight and they both hate exercise. My sil does walk a lot and has lost almost 3 stone over the past year by just not snacking at all and really limiting desserts and fried food.
I read an article a few months back that said that losing weight is hard work and you should be resting lots rather than exercising.
Try it. It’ll probably work quite well.

FoxRedBitch · 05/01/2020 10:17

Thanks. I am definitely moving more. We went for a 5 mile walk yesterday and will walk again today with the dog.

It's just that I work such long hours, I feel guilty enough to that I don't see my family enough and don't do enough housework. If I can't find the time for that then I definitely can't find the time for the gym etc.

I want this to be a long term life style change.

I am about 4 stone overweight. And quite lazy! 😂

A 5 mile walk is exercise
Sounds like you're more active than you think .

I read an article a few months back that said that losing weight is hard work and you should be resting lots rather than exercising.

Well that was a dumb article. Seriously, about the dumbest thing I have read. Losing weight is not 'work'. You will need to be in a calorie deficit but a healthy diet that involves a moderate deficit does not leave a person so weak that that need to rest. Moderate exercise will help create the caller deficit. It also will build muscle which is metabolically more active that fat. Your hormonal balance improves with exercise and you become less insulin resistant which leads to...yep, weight loss. It is true that the vast majority of fat loss takes place int he kitchen but suggesting that exercise is "bad' during fat loss is just ridiculous.

OP, yes, you absolutely can lose weight through diet alone. But you will have to diet harder and for longer than if you incorporate some exercise. Very strenuous exercise can stimulate appetite but given that you have made it clear that you really dislike exercise, that seems like an unlikely scenario in your case. Just walk more. Try to do some body weight strength training - press ups etc. Not only will you help the weight loss, your skin and body will look miles better. That dreadful saggy skin people are left with after weightless is minimised when exercise is incorporated. You will look younger and better whatever size you are.

Op read the Louise Parket, Fit for life book, it's really good.

I lost close to 2 stone in 3 months, following this book totally, without adding exercise..like you l was reasonably active dog walking, gardening, bit of cycling with Dcs.

I realised l was carrying 2 stone of pure sugar! The recipes are sensible food, small portions and nothing processed....and most importantly no sugar.

It takes a commitment to changing lots of bad habits but it works and is sustainable and healthy.

Goatinthegarden · 31/01/2020 06:18

My friend has lost two stone over the last year by religiously following Slimming World and not exercising.

I’m bored of listening to her telling me how many syns are in everything though.

And our nights out have to end after the second gin and slimline tonic....

flowerpower18 · 31/01/2020 14:05

Weight loss happens when you are in a calorie deficit regardless of what exercise you do and don't do.

We actually don't burn as many calories through exercise as we think.

Find an online calculator, fill out your details and stick to whatever calorie goal your given. Try it for a few weeks and if your not losing weight then reduce by 5% per day.

TwoPointFourKidsAndADog · 31/01/2020 14:19

My brother has run more marathons that I can count. Last year I think was 10 alone. Yet he laments his middle age spread and tells me it's evidently more food related than exercise. Now he's actually going to cut his carbs rather than try to run even more.

I thought I'd lose weight by walking my dog but it's made no difference. I cut carbs and sugar and I've lost 2.4kg in about a month.

I'm convinced it's what we eat (and drink!).

FoxRedBitch · 01/02/2020 18:30

Well I have managed to lose nearly a stone this month!

I have been trying to have between 500-1000 calorie deficit on a daily basis.

I'm quite big (size 18) so apparently according to my Fitbit I burn about 2400 an an average day. So I try to eat as close to 1400 calories a day which I have found surprisingly easy.

I have been going to one gentle exercise class per week but it is mostly stretching etc.

Fingers crossed I can keep it up. I'm setting myself 1 stone goal loss at a time.

Me! I went from 11 st 3 to 8 st 7 with no exersize. I find it makes me even hungrier! I thought no probably doing exersize alongside diet would have been better though as although I look good in clothing...baked I'm quite soft and squishy!

sallievp · 13/03/2020 20:46

I thought that

sallievp · 13/03/2020 20:47

Naked not baked!!!! Sorry typo!

Womenwotlunch · 13/03/2020 21:01

I exercise a lot so that I can eat what I wanted

Marilynmansonsothereye · 13/03/2020 21:05

I'm an avid daily exerciser and even I think it makes little difference weight wise when compared to food intake. Maybe the whole family can go for walks or swimming or whatever if you do want to exercise but have little family time?

fishonabicycle · 16/03/2020 11:55

Exercise honestly doesn't make an awful amount of difference unless you are doing absolutely loads - the saying is that you can't out-train a bad diet.

Yes I did. I did Atkins and I was in my early 30s at the time -so easier. Also Atkins works like magic the first time, not so much thereafter. But I do agree it's mostly diet

Riviera2001 · 24/04/2020 15:59

lou967 · 15/05/2020 15:57

@Riviera2001same weight here. I'm 5ft8 though. I did 1200 calories 2 years ago and lost 6st to reach 10st. I've started a thread to keep me motivated and to keep others posted. It is hard work but worth it in the end.
