My breast pump has run out of battery on overnight trip

Hi, I’m breastfeeding my 11 month old twice a day. I’ve come away for a work trip yesterday, fed in the mornings and then forgot to pump last night (long long day and felt ok engorgement wise)
woken up with sore boobs, went to get my pump (it had battery life when I packed yesterday as I checked) and it won’t turn off and typically I didn’t pack the charger because rushing around/11 month old baby.
they are sore and I’m worried about mastitis and getting ill. I can’t seem to get anything out by hand expressing. All YouTube videos i can find are just talking with no help on hand expressing or trying to sell you a device.
can anyone help? I am so worried. I won’t be getting home until at least midnight tonight due to 6 hour drive.

Can you get to an Argos or John Lewis before you leave ? You could buy a hand pump?

YouveGotAFastCar · 19/10/2024 07:41

What’s the charger like? Is it one you could pick up from somewhere like a Curry’s - USB-C or whatever?

Monket · 19/10/2024 07:44

I suggest a hot shower with water hitting the breasts, and then massage whilst picturing baby - for me, heat kickstarts expression. Even a hot flannel. Try not to stress when doing it, that doesn’t help.

Can you ask reception for a charger…?

Prisonpillow · 19/10/2024 07:55

It’s probably a very standard charging cable. Can you find a local shop / ask around to borrow one.

Also chemists usually stock hand pumps. Something similar happened to me and I never went back to the electric and used the hand pump from then on.

It’s a spectra pump my friend let me, one from America, so has a very specific charger that isn’t easy to get hold of unfortunately. I’m at work and in a rural area so John Lewis, Argos etc an hour away. Thank you for the suggestions! I have managed some hand expressing but it is time consuming and hard work!!

Can you not just buy more batteries?

CheeseWineBainne · 19/10/2024 11:42

Try a local pharmacy for a non electric hand pump - you will get one for about a tenner - I used one in a similar pinch before and it was surprisingly effective.

(Google the lansinoh manual breast pump for an idea of what I mean)

Marmite27 · 19/10/2024 11:45

People have spectra’s in the uk, I had one 9 years ago! Mine had a standard charging cable. Can you get a picture of the cable end to help work out what type it needs?

Marmite27 · 19/10/2024 11:49

This is the type of charger you need if it’s any of these models.
