Could this be thrush or is it just my mastitus?

Hi

My DD is 11 days old, 4 days ago I got Mastitus. My latch was not good, despite being told otherwise by MW's () so ended up with cracks & sores. I am on anti-b's, which are taking a bit of time to kick in.

I saw a BF counsellor and she showed me how to adjust the latch, I think that I have improved this and yesterday my nipples started to feel better.

But today I they are getting sore again, they also hurt after I have fed her, like stabbing pain/burning pain in the nipple area. I also seem to have white lumps on my nipples, when I asked the MW what these were she just said it was skin.

My DD does not seem to have any symptoms, she has put on weight, having wet & dirty nappies, and seems fine.

So I am worried that it is thrush because I know that sores wont heal until thrush is treated. Or could it just be another symptom of mastitus? Or is it just that I have not got the latch correct?

So many questions.....

Oh gosh, you've had a hard start to things!

The thing is, going on antibiotics can cause breast thrush (just as it can cause thrush elsewhere). Stabbing burning pains in the nipple sounds quite a lot like thrush.

I'm glad to hear your DD is fine, but she will need to be treated too, as you can pass thrush back and forth between you.

Congratulations on the birth of your DD, though, and you're doing well to carry on. Please go see a BF counsellor again when you can, in case your latch can be improved any more?

Hello,
I just diagnosed myself with thrush based on what google tells me about it (red, sore nipples/white stuff in dd's mouth/stabbing pain/mild block in ducts 3 days ago) and going to GP on Tuesday for a check - will ask him for some anti-b for thrush.
What I wanted to say is that don't be fooled by your baby feeding well - mine is gaining weight by the hour, perfect latch-on (recently occasional fussiness on breast though) poo and wee fine..Some people don't present all symptoms - go to the doc for a yeast infection check anyway. Better be cautious than make it even worse by a bad thrush.
Good luck to you!

Cheers notquitecockney and Rezimezi*, I am seeing my midwife tomorrow so will ask her but will probably go to the GP anyway. I guess the worse thing that can happen is that I look like a mad, over cautious, first time mother!

I never knew how hard this was going to be! Think I have been slightly insane for the last 4 days

Hey Summerhols, agree and not. When fussy dd cries (well, pretty much constantly) I feel the same. When she's asleep or happy-jolly (rare) I feel 'oh, isn't it great to be a mum?'. Should get better though after the first three weeks. That's how long it took to me to get over my anxiety of 'oh God, how are we going to cope?!'. And I still do the mad, over cautious mother thing - I think that will stay for the next 25 yrs
