Could this be thrush or is it just my mastitus?

Hi

My DD is 11 days old, 4 days ago I got Mastitus. My latch was not good, despite being told otherwise by MW's () so ended up with cracks & sores. I am on anti-b's, which are taking a bit of time to kick in.

I saw a BF counsellor and she showed me how to adjust the latch, I think that I have improved this and yesterday my nipples started to feel better.

But today I they are getting sore again, they also hurt after I have fed her, like stabbing pain/burning pain in the nipple area. I also seem to have white lumps on my nipples, when I asked the MW what these were she just said it was skin.

My DD does not seem to have any symptoms, she has put on weight, having wet & dirty nappies, and seems fine.

So I am worried that it is thrush because I know that sores wont heal until thrush is treated. Or could it just be another symptom of mastitus? Or is it just that I have not got the latch correct?

So many questions.....

Sounds like thrush - get yourself checked asap.

You're going through the mill, eh? I hope it gets better for you x

Does DD have any signs of thrush in their mouth, ie white tounge? Often if u have thrush baby will too.

Also, Mastitis involves your milk ducts blocking so if pain generally in nipple area doesn't sound like mastitis. Has anyone suggested using Jelonet for sore nipples, you can get it from GP, or buy it (quite cheap)from chemist cut a small square an place on sore nipple between feeds. It is a parafin dressing so shouldnt affect baby. I've used it and found great relief!!

I had this - mastitis at exactly the same time as you and then tingling sore nipples. It was thrush but also, after tablets for thrush didn't work dr prescribed more AB for bacterial infection and another course of tablets for thrush. Finally started to feel better and my nipples began to heal.

It doesn't sound like mastitis but more like thrush. Have you been showed how to get the right latch? I found that once I was shown I could really feel the difference and also DS has a habit of sliding off my boob onto my nipple and that took the pain onto a whole new level so I knew it wasn't the latch.

I'd go see the GP and make sure you show them your boobs. The first time I went the GP (male) took my word it was thrush. Second time the female GP had a look and that's when the problem was solved.

Good luck.
