Have no idea about this sorry

Am bumping for you in the hope that someone smarter sees it and can help.

do you have thrush?

mum2JRC · 09/05/2010 10:12

Are you sure it's not a blocked duct and possibly mastitis ?????

If it is a blocked duct apply some heat to the area (hot water bottle, warm shower) keep feeding +++ and you can also try massaging the area to help.

Jst re-read your post and realised your thinking going on antibiotics for the boob problem and hoping to prevent thrush. Not sure of the answer sorry!

Hope it all clears up for you soon

a hot spot on the breast (rather than the nipple) sounds like a blocked duct. if you are engorged at the moment, try to hand express to make the area around the nipple softer to aid attachment. feed from that side also try to feed with the baby's chin pointing at the area of the blockage.

more easily done if lying down or semireclining using pillows to support you.

also contact a breastfeeding support line (ABM, BfN, LLL, NBH, NCT) and talk to someone with extensive knowledge. if you have been given ABs and little further information and support, then I would not be v optimistic about this person's wider ability to support your breastfeeding.

When I was on antibiotics, for retained stuff, I took a strong probiotic like this. I didn't get thrush thankfully, so I think it helped. I took the probiotic as near as exactly between the antibiotic doses (as far as possible with a tiny mewling baby in the house). The folks in my local herbalist didn't think the probiotic drinks would cut the mustard, hence the tablets instead. I took all the other precautions as well - regularly changing breast pads, nursing bra's etc. HTH
