Does giving formula to bf baby upset his tummy?

Ive been bf ds2 for 16 weeks. Once a week, dh will give him ebm from a bottle to give me a wee break and to enjoy a guilt free glass of wine! However, my store of ebm has ran out as i just can't seem to express any more than he requires. To be honest I don't really want to start expressing again and building up my supply and was wondering if its okay to introduce a bottle of formula? I've heard this will upset the 'good bacteria' in his gut and cancel out all the good work of bf - and tbh I'm feeling a bit guilty for even thinking about it. I only really want to to do this once a week. Whats your thoughts? I also feel guilty as I bf ds1 for 12months! I did ask my hv but she made me feel like an alcoholic cos I told her I wanted a drink!!

You can have a glass of wine whilst BFing...

second that - a glass of wine is fine whilst bfing. just be careful not to spill any on the baby

Lots of people do mixed feeding with formula and breast milk without causing upset tummies in babies so go right ahead. Aptamil has probiotics in, which are the good bacteria for the guts.

Your HV is talking nonsense. Nothing wrong with a glass of wine.

From La Leche League:
Dr. Jack Newman, member of the LLLI Health Advisory Council, says this in his handout "More Breastfeeding Myths":

Reasonable alcohol intake should not be discouraged at all. As is the case with most drugs, very little alcohol comes out in the milk. The mother can take some alcohol and continue breastfeeding as she normally does. Prohibiting alcohol is another way we make life unnecessarily restrictive for nursing mothers.

Thanks everyone for your reassurance. You're told so many different things! Anyway this weekend ds2 will be having a bottle of formula as I dare to have a night out. and I'm not going to feel guilty about it! (I will of course but thats just par for the course Lol!)
