Weight loss when you finish breast feeding

mama2moo · 16/04/2010 22:54

I am currently breast feeding my 10 week old dd and love it.

My only concern is that I am not loosing any weight and have actually put some on.

I want to feed until she is 6mo and just wondered how much weight you lost when you finished feeding. Did it just fall off? Did you put on weight?

I am eating no more food then usual and exercising regularly. I dont eat 500 extra a day for feeding. Thanks.

I lost some of my baby weight while feeding, but held onto at least half a stone each time till after I finished feeding, Then it came off slowly, without me dieting or anything. I did eat like a pig when bfeeding, and the desire/need to do that went away when I stopped.

Someone told me it's an evolutionary thing - your body holds onto some fat to make sure you have sufficient resources to feed your baby even if you hit a period of famine.

Enjoy your feeding time, and worry about the weight later

i never lost any while bf ds1, or afterwards

i lost lots with ds2, but that's only because i had to cut dairy and egg out of my diet

so far with ds3 i am staying pretty static

it isn't a given that you will lose weight

honeydragon · 16/04/2010 23:06

I am going to now monitor this thread like a hawk - i have yet to meet a real human i.e not a sleb who can honestly say bf made her fat melt away - i too am a lose a bit and stays on to them hips till i stop.

then i go and bloody ruin that by going back on the wine - this time when i stop I WILL NOT DRINK.

hellymelly · 16/04/2010 23:09

I know quite a few people like me who cling on to a good ten punds while breastfeeding, they all lost it when they stopped, just gradually came off over time,I am still bf so I am still fatter! was fatter than this when the babies where v small though as I was so constantly hungry.

amummy30 · 16/04/2010 23:30

I have lost weight breastfeeding for sure, i am a stone lighter than I was pre pregnancy, and i was up until a week ago eating a lot more than i normally would!! before being pregnant i was a size 16 im no into a 14!!

honeydragon · 16/04/2010 23:38

amummy30 cool are you really real? I have hope.

you're not actually Holly Willohby are you?

I'd be gutted if you were, i want to meet the real people who have lost as an incentive to curb my cake habit

amummy30 · 16/04/2010 23:45

hahaha, holly willoughby i am not!! I dunno whats happeneing cus it didnt happen with ds1, ds2 is 12 weeks now btw, I do have a road map of stretch marks on my stomach to make up for it though!! haha

I also express quite a lot of milk on a regular basis so I dunno if that makes any difference

honeydragon · 16/04/2010 23:50

ooooh back out comes the pump

amummy30 · 16/04/2010 23:51

pump out those pounds!!!

winnybella · 16/04/2010 23:57

I gained 55 pounds with both dcs. It came all off while bf, but definitely mostly after 6-8 months. DD is now 14 m and still bf and I have 4 pounds to lose, but it'll come off soon.
I didn't diet, btw and also didn't lose much (except water retention etc after birth) in the first 3-4 months.
HTH

PricklyThistle · 16/04/2010 23:57

I put on stones during and after breast feeding and 3 years later haven't lost a pound. Might be because I eat too much and do no exercise though

Really really must do something about it. Starting Monday.

windflower · 17/04/2010 00:04

I lost 10 kg immediately (well within the first 2 weeks of giving birth) and now with a 6 month old baby I am a whopping 20 kg over weight - I am BF but eat loads of cakes, I do also try exercise.

I would like someone to tell me how long it would take to realistically lose 20 kgs, if I give up cakes - I am quite tall but being 95 kgs is no fun

windflower · 17/04/2010 00:06

does anyone want to start a yummy mummies healthy eating thread?

honeydragon · 17/04/2010 00:08

if we did can we still have cake?

windflower · 17/04/2010 00:14

yes - although I would try not to have too much...
how about we write down what we eat, or what exercise we do - if we are able to - I mean obviously if you have a young baby you may not have the time or be able to exercise so there would be no pressure.

amummy30 · 17/04/2010 10:43

im up for it, st had weetabix and banana for breakfast and now i'm going to play football in the park with ds1

windflower · 17/04/2010 11:02

well done amummy30 well I had a cup cake although it was a dairy free one and it was spectacular, and a glass of milk.

I am going to play in the park now with my DS.

I will try be good for the rest of today.

amummy30 · 17/04/2010 11:13

i am going to center parks for the week on monday though, so im likely to be very very naughty :O

shesdrivingmecrazy · 17/04/2010 11:25

I put on about a stone when b/feeding.

I stopped at 6 months and lost a stone (to end up the same weight I was just giving birth!)

Was still a stone overweight when I got pregnant with this one.

Am determined to lose weight while b/feeding this time, or at the very least not to put weight on.

I found it pretty easy to lose the stone after I gave up but it didn't melt away - I worked at it.

Catz · 17/04/2010 11:29

I have DEFINITELY lost weight breastfeeding this time. With DD I lost it initially but then kept on about 1/2 a stone more than usual - still there when I stopped feeding at 18 mnths. I then got pg immediately so don't know how quickly it would have gone. This time I can't eat enough to keep my weight up. DS is 18 weeks and I'm 8 kilos less than I was at my booking in appointment and a BMI around 18.5. I'm definitely not eating too little - in fact I've taken to baking cakes because my cafe habit was getting too expensive. I bought a couple of different pairs of size 8 jeans a few weeks ago and they fitted then but are now so loose that at the park yesterday they slipped over my hips when I was walking fast and would have left my exposed to the world if Id not managed to shift DS and pull them up in time. Am actually getting a bit worried about it.

[hides hoping no-one wants to kill me but thought it may offer hope...]

windflower · 17/04/2010 23:01

I slipped up tonight - pizza, sweets and then more pizza...

but I did do exercise today.

Good on you Catz - I have taken to baking cakes but my BMi just keeps going up.

HomeintheSun · 18/04/2010 09:43

I have no idea how much I weigh as I don't have any scales,I'm a 14/16 I am BF my 24 weeks old DD and I have a DS who is 3.4 years. I lost a bit of weight after having DD but we moved back to the uk where there's nice doughnuts and I put some back on. My DH wants to lose weight and he's on about doing the cabbage soup diet which I refuse to do (as I'm BF and because I'm not 90 I don't need to drink my food.) I am going to aim to eat more fruit and veg, less cake and chocolate and do more excerise, I some time (weather permitting) walk down to school to collect DS and I have a wii fit that I will now use because DD is in more of a routine. I will start the healthy eating at lunch time, just had toast and chocolate spread for breakfast.

WoTmania · 18/04/2010 12:49

My weight dropped off once my DCs got to 5-6 months. I don't put on a massive amount though. DS2(2.10) and DD(13mo) are still nursing and I'm back in size 8-10 clothes.

WoTmania · 18/04/2010 12:50

But I would point out that while I eat like a horse it's all healthy stuff and I carry DD everywhere in a sling and walk lots.

raindroprhyme · 18/04/2010 19:34

Came out of hospital day3 with DS1 in my levi's
I was only 18 tho and could still get them on the day before i gave birth just couldn't button them up. I am very envious now of my 18 yo self.

I was at my thinist(sp) towards the end of feeding DS2 i fed him for 11 months, scary size 6 skinny not a good look for normal size 10 me. i lost pregnancy weight really quickly with him, by 2 months.

At the mo DS3 is 11weeks and i have 1/2 a stone still clinging on but eat like crap. I am endeavouring to get into some kind of routine so i am eating better and walking more. I refuse to buy a new wardrobe for the summer so need to be back to normal pronto.

Don't forget your large breast can weigh alot so discount that from post pregnancy weight.
