Is St John's Wort safe to take if breastfeeding?

I picked up two packets in the chemist, one said 'not recommended if lactating' and the other didn't mention it. My googling skills all go to links about not taking it during pregnancy, nothing about lactating. Even kellymom doesn't tell me much.

I only breastfeed my 16-mo-old once per 24 hours now, so I'm really reluctant to hold off unless there's a compelling reason. And even then, I'd be tempted to wean instead.

Can anyone tell me if it's okay to take SJW?

Darn, I suppose having a handy breastfeeding expert online first thing in the morning was hoping for a bit much.

took st johns wort prior to becoming pregnant 4 years ago asked consultant at time if safe to take in pregnancy he advised no as being a herbal remedy it would not
have undergone the same testing procedures as normal meds so dangers would not be known . so expect same advice probably folows for breast feeding . it may be ok but you couldnt be certain. personally i wouldnt risk it

Yeah, that's what I'm getting - no-one can tell me what's wrong with it or what the dangers are, just 'oh well we don't know'.

And I breastfeed a huge kid once per 24 hours, so that's a bit different from the risk to a foetus.

Hmm.

I'll try googling some more.
