I have a six month old baby whom I fed today 4 hours after taking threadworm medication, my 4 year old caught them at school and I took the medication too as a precaution, totally forgetting about the effect on my milk, I took 400mg tablet of zental also known as albendazole, now I am very worried, baby seems fine, ive checked on the net read very conflicting info one said it was ok to take whilst breastfeeding, another said it was not, what could happen what should I do?? thanks for any help

Phone your GP or local pharmacist and ask them to look it up for you.

It is probably fine most medications safe for use in children are ok in breastfeeding.

No possible reason to be at all concerned, mandy toxnet.nlm.nih.gov/cgi-bin/sis/htmlgen?LACT. This site says a single dose is actively permitted.

Most medication does not reach breastmilk in anything like significant quantities to affect babies

Mandybagpuss! I think I know you from a previous cyberlife.....do you have twins? I think we met on babycentre? I'm in the south of Italy.

Congratulations on your latest arrival!

When my baby was about 10 months I found a threadworm when changing her nappy. She must have picked them up when crawling around. The doctor prescribed OVEX (mebendazole) for her even though it's not licensed. She said that some drugs even though not licensed for under twos are used regularly with no reported ill effects. So I don't think you need to worry about what comes through in your milk. HTH

When my baby was bout eight mts we had thread worms in the family. She was given a smaller dose and has lived to tell the tale!
