my head is killing me, (and vision going a bit fuzzy, plus feel sick, hoping it's not going to be a full scale migraine as on my own with DS this weekend) paracetamol isn't doing anything, really need something else but not sure of I can take ibuporfen as I'm breast feeding, anyone know? thanks!

packet says no. also no to any kind of coedine.

could you express? dod you have a bm cache you could use?

Sonilaa · 19/03/2010 17:16

when baby is older than one month it should be ok. was advised by gp because of a bad cold with fever when dd was 2 months old.

FakePlasticTrees · 19/03/2010 17:19

Why 'nay', driven?

It doesn't seem to have any problems with it - check for yourself, FakePlastic, here:
toxnet.nlm.nih.gov/ and here:
www.breastfeedingnetwork.org.uk/drugs-in-breastmilk-information-and-factsheets.html

Seems there is no need to express or to avoid. Ask the pharmacist if you are concerned.

Hope this helps.

oh, he's 3 months, might take some after his next feed, I'll have 4 hours then before he needs anything (trying not to eye up the emergancy formula)

Really?! Bugger.

My doctor (although prone to stupid BF comments) tends to know her stuff about BF drugs and she said no. I didn't check, it's the first time I haven't .

I've just had 5 days of high fever and a lot of pain (ear and throat infections) whilst looking after a 9month old and a 2 1/4 year old on my own...

at GP

I was told it was fine by both midwife and paed in hospital (actually recommended as better for nasty episiotomy stiches than paracetamol). They did say that the 'no' was outdated advice but surpisingly commonly given out still ...

RubyBuckleberry · 19/03/2010 18:47

i had cocodamol and diclofenac all fine here!

CokeFan · 19/03/2010 18:51

I've had ibuprofen (really strong stuff too) while breastfeeding. My doctor said it was ok because DD was over 6 months so no longer exclusively breastfed.

weasle · 19/03/2010 20:00

Hmm, i think it is fine in bf (not in pregnancy though). The British National Formulary says 'amount too small to be harmful but some manufacturers advise avoid'

i certainly have taken it, both immediately post birth (episiotomy) and later on.

FlightofFancy · 19/03/2010 20:25

I've got a chart somewhere about what (basic) meds you can take while BF - it's in one of the many leaflets/booklets I got from either hospital or HV and that says paracetamol should be first choice, but if not then ibuprofen is OK. Quite aside from that, I was given codeine in the hospital post birth!
